Hey thevoiceover!
I finally found the answer to your question about being ticketed on private property. This is a quote from the Colorado Vehicle & Traffic Statute, 42-4-1208 -- "Parking Privilege for Persons with Disabiities - Applicability.
(5) It is unlawful for any person other than a person with a disability to park in a parking space on public or private property that is clearly identified by an official sign as being reserved for use by persons with disabilities . . . ." Whether the police will come on private property to issue a ticket for this might be a different story.

The Colorado Springs Handicap Enforcement Unit is a volunteer group of common citizens. Not sure about Denver. I will send you a PM (Private Message -- look in the top right hand corner of your forum screen under "Welcome thevoiceover") with the link for the Colorado Springs Unit. They can probably answer all your questions about the Colorado Handicap laws. I am mostly familiar with California Handicap Laws, as my current and former husbands are/were both handicapped.

Lastly, each state (don't know about counties) is different with it comes to parking at meters without paying. In California, we could. When I went on a relocation scouting trip before we moved to North Carolina, I found out the hard way, you couldn't (got a ticket).

Hope this helps!
Vicki

Unhappy I have a new invention to prevent unauthorized parking in "handicapped" spaces.

I came up with this brilliant idea about 10 years ago but technology had not caught up with me yet. Now the technology I needed seems to be everywhere and much more affordable than it would have been way back then.
It is an amazing solution but I don't know where to start! I'm just a home school Mom. I don't want to get scammed by those "Invention helpers" and getting a grant is incredibly complicated. I certainly don't want to just GIVE it away but it NEEDS TO BE DONE! I have read hundreds of parking abuse complaints. I know the problem, and I really do have a great solotion! Somebody please help!!!

Default Response to Security Worker and Handicap plackard

I'm handicapped. To look at me, you would never know it. I have a metal spine from S1 to L5 but don't need to walk with any assistance most of the time. I just can't go very far without my legs trying to give out on me. I also have A-fib (Atrial Fibrillation). Now, would you, yourself, know that by looking at me? There are times when I feel great and don't think I need it, but that would be the time when I would be parked way out in Timbuk Two and my heart would either give me fits, or I would fall because my legs gave out. To see that, would you know that I was handicap if you just saw me breathing heavy and not being able to walk while doing that, or if you see me fall because my legs give out? I'm 5'5" and weigh 149. I'm by no means overweight so I don't need it because people want to think "oh, they're fat so they think they need one". That is not my case. When you get frustrated, maybe you ought to think of the disabilities that you can't see. You can't see mine, but believe me, my husband has been happy that I have it when he has to run out to get the vehicle because I can't take two steps more and it's close enough to where he doesn't have to go far to get it for me. What are your thoughts now?

Cool They just dont know !

After 2 years which was actually a short time considering how long it takes most to get placards or tags for their vehicles , I finally got my tags. After the rigorous detailed "Denied ! " and all the tests ,doctors and such. What most lazy able bodied people do not realize when they park in a place designed paticularly for those with disabilities is what we have to go through and what we had to leave behind and take for granted their own abilities and scoffing at ours.It only tells me one day those who do scoff and intimidate will also recieve the disabling factor for their abuse and then only then they will know theyve reached our side of life and thats sad but the Lord works in mysterious ways and we all know that .So next time you want to rip their heads off you might just say , "Yes , one day you will join our club and then someone can pay you back in kind, paybacks come hard!" ,and then walk off laughing. It just might make them think soon because remember they are slow of thought , so it may have to take a week or two to sink in.happy parking ! , and GOOOD Luck ! ! Note # you dont have to limp to be disabled, internal organs may be out/replaced whatever.Heart ect..If they have the tag or card you know they must have been through a war.

Life is not about money and if you got a good idea let us know what it is because you may not be here tomorrow , the "IDEA!" is to HELP the handicapped right? Well ?Maybe not so brilliant then.Even Tesla gave us ideas but he helped without glory or monetary gain and look at us now there is light and power for our devices , he is what I consider a true hero.Or just maybe you'll be handicapped one day and regret not letting it out by being beset by the same problem. The taxpayers will wind up paying for implemented devices which the city will install and cost us all more in the long run as if we dont have enough bills and taxes.take some good sage advice, Help while you're on earth , leave honored. If you are so into the sale of helping others you might PATENT the device , then "sell ", your idea with of course a working device that shows it use and credibility , reliabilty ect.. Heck Id just put a cam on a separate store monitor with license plate and car showing and then police collect and ticket according to infraction. But I guess that will never happen.Ive come to the conclusion no one really gives a damn until they are there..... on anything in life.Good luck with your idea hope to see something work someday.

In a related vein, one of my fellow truck drivers has one leg. Our trucks have automatic transmissions with no clutch pedal, so he has no problems driving. And getting in and out of the truck is routine for him now. We don't unload the trailers at the stores where we deliver so that's not a challenge for him, either. I have noticed Handicapped spaces in the truck stop truck parking. I'm sure there are able-bodied idiots that don't think a truck stop should have Handicapped parking, but I've met or read about several drivers who can manage a truck quite well with handicaps.

I work with a 32 year old man that uses his mother's handicap parking sticker.
The only health issue is that he weighs 300lbs, and pure lazy. Makes me sick that he is too lazy to walk an extra 5 feet. While my father, dying of heart failure, refuses a handicap sticker! They both go to DisneyLand every year and put her in a wheelchair so they can get on the rides faster.

I had one of those handicapped things for my rear view mirror when my Mom was alive. After she died, I went and took it back to the Town Clerks office, and they said that I didn't need to bring it back. I asked then what would prevent me from using it myself. She said nothing, really. I honestly thought that after my Mom was no longer living, and since I got it because of her, that I would have had to take it back. That should change.

One thing that bothers me about the parking up close to stores, is Wally World. They have "Parking for expectant mothers" closer to the entrance than the handicapped parking. WTH is that??? Last I knew being pregnant was a choice. Being handicapped wasn't.

I went to pick up my daughter after school today, I have a placard, it is for fibromyaliga and RA. This woman who is big on the bottom side, was parked in the handicapped parking area, I could not park because of her, she has done this numerous times.
I parked right behind her, and then went up to her window, I asked her if she was handicapped, she said well no, I said will excuse me but this is for handicapped parking only, she said yeah, like so what.
I told her then not to back up because I was parked behind her, she never offered to move, so I got back into my car, and I called the police and reported her. I told them she has done this numerous times, and she needs a ticket. They took down the lic. and type of vec. so I guess I will see if she decides to do that again.
When she came out of the school with her daughter, she looked at me like, well are you going to move???? If I wasn't in pain and was as big as she was, I think I would have decked her right there. But I am tiny and she would have knocked me into the next world. Thanks for the rant. Yorkie
