Default Ark. Prisoners Prefer Money Over Fruit

ksl.com - Ark. Prisoners Prefer Money Over Fruit

Quote:
BENTON, Ark. (AP) - There will be some extra cash but no holiday fruit baskets for Arkansas prisoners this year.

In past years, state inmates received a holiday gift of an apple, an orange and $5 in commissary account money from the Corrections Department. But this year the state's more than 14,000 inmates will get $6 and no fruit.

Default Fruit vs. Cash

Personally I think it's a wonderful idea. You never know what an act of kindness will do to transform a person's life. I don't condone catering to inmates, but I think on occasion everyone needs something a little special, even if it's a piece of fruit or a real bar of soap. We have a friend whose son is incarcerated and at Christmas and on his birthday we send in a money order for him so he can go to the commissary and buy a few things to make his day a little brighter. He always writes and tells us "thank you" and tells us what he bought with his little bit of money. He says they don't feed them enough to really be satisfied and sometimes at night he gets so hungry. Apparently they have things on commissary like Raman noodle soup, cookies, snacks of different kinds, sodas, etc. He tells us it's nice to be able to have a cup of instant coffee and some cookies to take the edge off until breakfast is called at 3:30 a.m. Hopefully he, along with so many others, will have learned a lesson by the time they get out of those places.

In many states, inmates need to buy their own toilet paper... I can see why they would want more money instead of fruit...

What ever happened to bread and water? Seems like if prison was a little more harsh some of those would think twice about going back or ending up there to begin with.
