Default Secret Santa bad idea?

Secret Santa names of participants are placed in a hat, and each person draws a name for whom they are to buy a gift. Along with name submission, each participant may also submit a short wishlist of items from which the gift-giver can choose. There is often a limit to how much can be spent on the present. Presents are then exchanged anonymously.

Con: Someone buys a gift way under what the projected amount.
Someone does not a giver but is a giftee and that leaves someone without a gift.

Do you play secret Santa or hate Secret Santa?

I've only worked one place where they did this and I loved it- the secret Santa gave a little gift each day for four days and on Friday, the main gift. The daily gifts were little things.

I had so much fun with it- regifted some Bvlgari soaps and lotions from a really nice hotel (no hotel logos!) tucked into a shiny drawstring bag, a pretty angel ornament, a tiny Christmas frame....all nice new things and things that I knew she would like, but things I didn't want/need. I purchased a good chocolate bar for one of the days. I forget what I got her for the last day- the "big" gift. Was supposed to be a $10 limit.

But the most fun was keeping it a secret and overhearing her talk to others, trying to figure out who her secret Santa was. She jusy knew it couldn't be me, as one day I was off site all day (but had a friend leave the present at her door that morning- heh, heh!)

I had fun trying to guess mine, as well. She really put a lot of thought into what I would like....even got a green martini glass filled with glittery sprinkles one day!

I like Secret Santa. Somehow, I always end up with the 'cheapskate' as my Secret Santa but I always give great gifts and it's fun watching people guess!

I've done it at several past jobs and it was always fun. One time I received perfume, which I don't wear too often. Never even opened it and about five years later I looked it up on ebay and found it was discontinued and popular. I sold it for $140!
