Today I joined AARP. Seems that even though 60 is now the new 40, they now allow membership at 50....

I had to join on the phone as the online system was down for maintenance. We went through the usual questions- name, address, CC number, DOB, then at the end she asked me if I wanted to add a spouse at no additional charge. "Oh, wow! Sure!", I said, "I'd like him to be between 48-60."

I guess I misunderstood the question....

Now where's my darn discount?!

Itís good that they asked you before they sent one out to you. WOW that could be scary not knowing why you had some guy knocking at your door wanting to share your AARP membership.

There are some great bargains when Iíve traveled with discounted lodging! I always ask for the AARP pricing.

So it's really a good idea to have it? They've been sending me stuff to join over, ummm, ahhhhh, well, let's say "a while". :-)))

It's only like $12.50 or something right? But I've never joined yet.

HIF put me down for one. Just ONE. :-))))

50 has been the age to join AARP for quite some time. I understand from other members that their health insurance supplements to Medicare are exceptional. I have been a member for over ten years and will be taking advantage of the insurance when I sign up for Medicare in a few years.

I have used AARP for reduced travel costs; however, I find that Auto Club offers better discounts for hotel rooms.

As far as auto insurance; no provider has been able to beat the low rates I have with Farmers.

So, do I feel that I'm benefitting from being an AARP member? Not yet, but hope to reap the benefits of the supplemental health insurance.

I've been ignoring the mailings for almost three years....but have paid for the membership with the savings I got on reservations I just made for a three night stay in a hotel.

VP-I'm not sure if the add-a-spouse benefit is a special that they are running or if it is a regular benefit of membership. Also not sure if he will be arriving with my membership card or under separate mailing. Maybe he will come in a styrofoam container with dry ice, like Omaha Steaks.

I'll let you know when he arrives....

When I read the thread title I thought this was going to be a burping contest. Really!

Anyway - They have some pretty good rates for term life insurance, but unfortunately $30k is the max, I believe.

Being of "that age" I too was wondering what the deal was with aarp other than reminding you that you are of "that age"?

AARP is looking to serve all of the baby-boomers, it’s all about money ~ they benefit from a larger base and the members might benefit from their services they officer. They do have some great articles in their monthly magazine that are helpful, and they also have an online website with good items of interests. Now if they only had a neighborhood coffee shop for get-togethers?
