One Christmas when I was about 5 or 6 my Mother, who raised my brother and I by herself in the 1960's on factory salary gave us the best Christmas presents ever.
We each got one color book, one small box of crayons (the ones that have 8 in the box) and one box of butter cookies.
To me that was the absolute best because I had my own color book, crayons and cookies and did not have to share with my brother.
She and I talked about that Christmas a few months ago and she told me that she sobbed for days because that was all she could afford for us.
I told her she had no reason to sob because that was the absolute best Christmas I remember. I made her cry.
It's funny how we didn't get that much for Christmas when small. Never really felt like we missed out though. Our kids and Gkids on the other hand are swamped with gifts.
I used to work on my own bike, fix the flats, brakes, chain etc. and paint them often. Got a new motorcycle at 14 and so did a friend. We were out running around one night and split up to go home. He lived a few blocks down from us. Soon as I got home he called all excited and said he saw a big cigar shaped thing in the sky over a nearby a Dairy Queen. He said it had porthole like windows. Even back then I didn't believe in such things. Don't recall hearing any more about it. Kids stuff.
