This year we had a little potted live tree.
I am going to move it to the front porch, and I am *hoping* I will keep it alive and we can use it again for Christmas 2008.
I try to keep things up until New Year's Day, but often I get the cleanup urge, and today I put everything away except the little lighted rosemary "trees" on our front porch. Their lights will come off on Jan 1st.

just a tip, once you take the lights off of the rosemary tree take your snips and open up the form so air can circulate.

We have an English background, so our tree stays up until Old Christmas, or 12 days after the American Christmas.

I prefer real trees, but they are expensive, and it's just not as handy as the artificial one. The last real tree we had, a number of years ago, came from a Christmas tree farm, where you cut it down yourself. It was nice, and it even came with live decorations, (no, don't think "Christmas Vacation" ). About a day after we it set up, I began noticing ladybugs flitting around the house. When I saw the first one, I thought perhaps it was a refugee from outside, until I realized they were everywhere. That's when we checked the tree, and sure enough, it was covered with ladybugs. Apparently, there must have been eggs on the tree, and in the warm house, they hatched! Needless to say, we've always remembered our "live" Christmas tree!
I take our tree down on New Year's Eve, (which reminds me...). I'd always heard that you should take it down before New Year's Day. You know, kind of an "out with the old, in with the new", sort of thing. Entering the New Year without the decorations of the old year, if you will.
