I'm pretty sure my mother-in-law likes me. She is always signing gifts and cards to me - love mom and dad. For the first couple of years she signed their first names. Of course we didn't meet until her son and I had been married for a few months, so I can understand her reservations for the first few years.

Nope. I learned early on what my mother in law was all about and don't mind saying that I put the rift on the relationship right from the start. My husband was in the hospital, recovering from a triple bypass. In fact, he was still in the intensive care unit when his mother called. I answered the phone and handed it to my husband. I would have thought she was calling to give him well wishes or all her love or something like that. But when my husband listened, then pouted and looked ashamed, then said good-bye I asked him what that was all about. He said she called to scold him that she hadn't received a birthday card from him. And my husband asked me to go to the gift store and quickly get a birthday card for her and get it into the mail right away. That did not happen. I assure you that there was no misunderstanding about how I felt about that witch from that point forward.

I'm married to a man that is quite a bit older than I am. One benefit is no MIL.

I'm glad I don't have that benefit. My MIL not only likes me but she makes the world's best homemade ice cream.
