Default Tattooed people?

I would like to ask this question of you to gain insight into how people feel about tattooed people in America.

Let's say you see a person who looks very friendly, approachable and sincere. They seem intelligent, educated, happy, healthy and carry themself with confidence. They look like they might even be successful and have money.

Then taking a closer look, you realize that their arms are covered with tattoos. Not just a small one, but big ones that really fill of the arms. Not criminal tattoos, not skulls or gang names, but designs of a more artistic or spiritual nature.

How would this change your impression of this person? Would it make you think different of them? Would it make you more repelled or interested in them? Would you still want to be this person's friend? Would you think less of them, or think more highly of them in some way? Would you avoid them and not want to be associated with them? What else would you think? What other thoughts do you have about tattooed people?

I think everyone nowadays is trying to be trendy and jumping on the 'tattoo bandwagon. Years ago the only people with tattoos were sailors and bikers.
Now every man, woman and child is getting into it and it's getting out of hand.
It's especially 'repelling'(as per your question) on young beautiful women. Nothing ruins nice skin more than ugly grey blotches on them! If they're placed in the right spot perhaps, like the standard lower back or butt or maybe ankle. Anyplace else they start to look like a dude and I like my women feminine.
As far as the rest of your questions,I wouldn't necessarily avoid them but I'm pretty much anti-mainstream and respect people who are individuals and don't feel the need to follow trends.

A tattoo is just a leisure suit that you can't take off. The person wearing a leisure suit may be nice, intelligent, kind, and all those other things. But ultimately that person is wearing a leisure suit. And while he's stylin' right now, ten years from now he'll look like a dork, one who can't escape his dubious fashion tastes of the past.

The thing about tattoos is that, no matter how cute you think they are now, they'll look like a disfiguring skin disease in about 10-15 years. And that's if you stay the same size. Put on 50 pounds or start to sag, and God knows what it will look like.

How do you know that the person got those tattoos as a "leisure suit" and to be "stylin", or look "cute"? Isn't this a big assumption on your part to think that this is the motivation behind this person getting a tattoo? Maybe they got the tattoos for much deeper reasons than that?

From my experience, only a small number of people get tattooed for reasons that are this superficial. Most people's tattoos hold deep religous or philosophical symbolism.

It depends what city you're in though I guess. Some cities have a more "shallow" culture than others.

It has nothing to do with shallowness. No matter how populat they become, a majority of people will not like them. If I were to get a tattoo, I would make sure it was in an area that can be covered if need be. It is really inconsequential to most people why you got a tattoo. They are a social risk that you can only decide to take for yourself.

I don't necesarilly know if it means you're shallow if you don't like tatoos... personally I would never get one, but my brother has his arms and back covered in them.

I do however, feel that it is appropriate to cover them up while working in a professional environment, and I'm sure anybody's boss would feel the same way.

The type of person that the OP described is the type of person who thought long and hard about what s/he got ink'd, sometimes up to a few years for a particular piece. Most, if not all of these tattoo's have a special meaning to the individual and in a lot of cases they are used to mark/remember milestones or certain events in a person's life. None of these people care what you think of them because they are 100% personal.

The type of people that end up regretting them are usually the one's that got them for the wrong reasons; they were in a frat/soroity; they had a favorite band; a girlfriend; they were drunk; thought that it would make them cool--what have you.

Ink technology has come along way and most ink these days will not fade or bleed out later on in life. Granted, people's skin does change over time, but people also get bald. Who cares? That's life!

You'd be surprised at how many power brokers, real estate agents, bankers, etc. have tattoos.

What I meant was that shallow people tend to get tattoos for shallow reasons. But people of depth and character get tattoos that reflect this.

But yes, I would say that on the whole, it is a bit "shallow" to pass heavy judgements against somebody just for having tattoos. It's just as bad as racism or sexism really if you ask me. Judging people on their physical appearance.....

I don't care who the person is, what they do for a living, or anything else about them; tattoos are just ugly to me. It definitely impacts my impression of a person, in a negative way. I don't understand why anyone would want to disfigure themselves.
