I wrote a few Thank You letters in my life to friends and family after an extended stay at their home while traveling overseas. And I received maybe 1 or 2 myself. I remember receiving one from the government when I was a teenager, it was in response to a protest message I sent with other pupils from my school about the Indonesian occupation of East Timor at the time.
