My grandmother was French Canadian. When she cut herself, or dropped a pan, or had any kind of mishap, she would cry, M e r d e!" When I was little, I thought she was saying, "Murder!" So I started saying, "Murder!" when I had little mishaps, like falling off a bike or tripping. One day, I was with my grandmother and something happened, I don't remember what, and I exclaimed, "Murder!" My grandmother said, "What did you say!" And I told her, I said "Murder, just like you do." She broke out laughing, and said, "Honey, I'm not saying 'Murder', I'm saying 'm e r d e' which means s h i t in French."
