I breastfed both my kids, sometimes in fairly public places, but always covered up. It's not that hard to use a bit of discretion.
Some "lactivists" seem awfully militant about it, and insist on *openly* nursing kids who, after the age of 2, might want to drink their milk out of a cup instead.
To me, it takes some of the enjoyment out of the bond of mother and child when you turn breastfeeding into this boobs-in-your-face nurse-in crusade.
OTOH
I read about a Delta passenger who was asked to leave an airport lounge while breastfeeding an 8 month old baby boy, then had a passenger loudly complaining about the nursing during the flight--I don't know if she was using a blanket.
When it comes to hearing a screaming baby on a plane, or seeing a kid breastfeeding during that flight, I know which I would prefer.

"Lactivist"...that's a good one! As for screaming babies...heck, if breastfeeding would shut the screaming baby on a plane up, I'd demand the mother pull out a boob and get to work. I had a flight from Frankfurt, Germany to Detroit, Michigan a couple of years ago where a baby screamed practically the WHOLE flight. I nearly went mad It was torture and that the parents of that child did nothing to pacify it made me furious as it inflicted misery of the rest of us, the captive passengers.

Do both of them feed at the same time. If so than consider yourself a multi-tasker . I don't understand why people get so uptight on a subject thats so natural. I agree with you, all it takes is a little discretion.

I am completely for it. I would feed him whenever or where ever as that was his sole source of food. Once he was 9 months and started on solids, I stopped breastfeeding except for at naptimes and nighttimes up untill he was 20 months. I do think that you should be discreat about it. I breastfed my son in public a couple times and I used a light blanket to cover him or I always wore a baggy shirt so that would cover my boob anyways. Most of the time I took him out to my truck (suv) as that was just more comfortable for us and I have limo tint on the windows so it was private. People that say putting a blanket over them is breaking the eye contact bond is full of it unless you breastfeed in public all the time. Save the eye contact boob poping out for at home when the majority of their feeding are. The few times you are going to feed in public are not going to hurt the bond. When a child is old enough to eat solids 80% of the time, then there is no need for breastfeeding in public I think. But if you really feel the need, go ahead, I not going to stop you. I just wouldn't do it.

I'm not sure your mother would be impressed to hear that.

I've had 5 kids and breastfed them all. And they were all breastfed to different ages, depending on the child and their needs. The youngest any of them stopped was 9 months and she did that on her own. Then I had one nurse until 17 months, she had severe allergies and literally couldn't tolerate anything but breastmilk and I was on a restricted diet. The longest I've lasted was just over two years, she too needed to be nursed until that age. However, at that age they are usually nursing for comfort, not necessarily for nutrition needs (I am NOT discounting that by any means). However, my sister's mother in law, breastfed some of her kids until they were FIVE!! They couldn't hardly even sit on her lap anymore. I always joked that she filled their thermos' in kindergarten with breast milk.

Conservative veiws on nursing in public
As a good hearted catholic, decent conservative that i am, i feel that sexual indecent exposure such as public nursing should be illegal in all 50 states for good American conservative values
