What am I supposed to do when this happens? A letter was sent by the "Office of the Governor" of my state to someone with an address similar to mine and I accidentally opened it. I believe it was sent about 10 days ago but I just returned from vacation. I'm hoping it doesn't look like I've been holding onto it for 10 days to impede the delivery.

Write "Opened in Error" on the envelope, and put it in a mailbox for delivery to the person it was addressed to.

I would stick it back in the envelope & drop it back in the mail box, requesting a correct delivery, ( on the envelope)

Does it need a new envelope? The top part is ripped open. And if it does, do I put my address or the original sender's in the return address part?

Actually, I decided to just tape it up and put "Misdelivered mail. Opened in error. Please send to intended recipient." Hopefully that is OK.

That sounds just fine. I opened a letter from Discover Card once, and then saw that it was addressed to my next door neighbor. I put a note on it that I opened it by mistake and then put it in his mailbox.

This Letter from the Governor: It wasn't a stay of execution was it? Hopefully he got it before the warden pulled the switch.

This happened to me once.

Neighbor opened my electric bill by mistake. She put a sticky on the envelope, wrote me a nice message, and placed it at my door.

No big deal.

Sneak in the Post Office late at night.. and casually slip it in the mail slot.. and sulk and slink out quietly ... keep a eye on the secret cameras.. and wear rubber cloves so you don't leave any finger prints.. and don't lick anything DNA..

Just wave at your local post Man / Women and tell them what happened.. Have a great day...

Is that an important message, or just some sort of a junk mail? If junk, then discard, no reason to fwd.
