Default Gun ownership

I was married to a gun fanatic (he used to reload his own ammo). I went "plinking" with him several times, and it was more fun than I thought it would be. I used to like to shoot .38 bullets through his .357 handgun. The gun had a pretty good recoil, too!

I wouldn't own guns with children around. Even adolescents, who are supposed to know about gun safety by the time they reach that age, can at impulsively and do something stupid. That's a personal decision that I've made, though, and I respect others' different decisions.

Something important: Please, please, please make sure that your children don't play in the street with toy guns!!! My son almost got shot by a cop; the only thing that saved his life was the bottle of bright yellow pellets nearby. This occurred only three weeks before his graduation from high school. And before anyone jumps on me about letting him have the toy guns in the first place, let me add that I made it very clear to him that he couldn't play with them in public. This incident took place in broad daylight, too (if it had been dark, the outcome probably would have been very different).

My dad had a 9mm hand gun he used to take me out tarket shooting, ok fine dad!! I had more fun with the cross bow he bought!!! Is that considered arms? I can do some damage with that!!
Anyway, I get freaked out by the toy gun thing as well, it is sad that we have to think this way but guns have become such a huge issue, cops feel thay can never be to careful, criminals have far to much access to them and that I believe is the real issue, how do we stop that without infringing on *RIGHTS*, I dont know that we can.

My son (13) at the time received one of those guns your talking about, as a gift without my permission. I went ahead and let him keep it with strict rules.
We live in the country .Rules were: he could only use it when his dad was outside with him and all my younger children must be inside the house. The gun must be kept locked in the shed.
One day, I got home about 30 minutes after he got home on the bus.
He was in the house watching TV. I was making trips in and out of the house bringing in the groceries. When I noticed several strange holes in our green house ,about the same size as those little colorful bullets are.
I am glad it wasn't a real gun!
Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention!

Look at the Vancouver Board of Trade letter to the Prime Minister in March of this year about crime in Canada if you care too (Google). There's no doubt that many crimes happen because of easy access to firearms in the U.S., but overall, most people who have them are responsible and a burglar expects to be met by a rifle or revolver toting homeowner in the U.S. In Canada or Britain or Germany where burglary rates are sky-high, they know the owners won't likely have any weapons. Easy targets. I believe we need to maintain our right to firearms, but relentlessly prosecute anyone who abuses them illegally. I'm about to buy a .22 calibre rifle for myself, not too high a calibre, but I want home protection just in case and I am nervous personally with revolvers or short guns. I prefer rifles. A rifle takes intent to point which means if I have it, I'm more than likely going to mean it if I ever have to aim it.
MoMark forget the .22, get yourself a nice .9mm Glock G19. It holds 15 rounds, it's light and the action is smooth. If you shoot someone up in the frigid north where you live thats all bundled up with a .22 you may not get any penetration. If you like long guns better, go for a Remington 870 shotgun. I've never failed to get ones attention when I had to rack a round into the 870. You will get instant respect. It is a sound that's universally identifiable. If you need to use it load it up with 00 buck. You'll either stop them dead in their tracks or scare the crap out of them and they will head for the hill's, never to return.

I'm a wuss exhdo1. I'd scare myself with a shotgun! I agree that the sound though is impressive... but..I feel comfortable with a .22. Missouri the frigid north?? Are you in the Keys or something? lol. Hey, Minnesota is what I consider the frigid north! It's been darn cold here these past couple of weeks for sure, but it's 20 degrees colder than usual and by next week we should be back to high forties...

hey did anyone see the news. The D.C. gun ban is headed for the supreme court on the 2nd amendment issue. D.C. is saying if your not in a militia than you can't own a firearm and they are fighting it to the supreme court. It is the first case that is going all the way. I just Read it in a update on WMUR.COM web site.

We, as citizens, by definition, are part of the militia. Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, part b: "a body of citizens organized for military service". During the Revoluntionary War, it was every able bodied man, not just a military, as we understand it in modern terms, as in army, navy, etc. They were farmers, shopkeepers, blacksmiths, etc., organized in a time of emergency. This is one of many laws that is chock-full of idiocy. I've said it before, and I will say it again, I do not want to have to wait for someone else to rescue me. I want to be able to defend myself, if necessary. It is a very good thing that our ancestors didn't have the same laws on the books, back then, or we would have stayed hog-tied to ol' King George! I've already quoted this once, but it bears repeating:

"An armed man is a CITIZEN. An unarmed man is a SLAVE".

Well then we better get organized( just having guns doesnt mean we are organized) and plan to serve.

Had a Glock once, a .40 caliber. Good gun, but I found that I prefer a revolver. Easier to use, easier to clean. Have to contend with you on the 9mm, though. Most cops don't seem to even care for them, although they seem to be standard issue. I've even heard horror stories of the cops having a devil of a time stopping someone, who is hopped up on drugs, like PCP. In the case of having to protect myself, I'll take a .357 mag, thank you.

As to shotguns, I'd have to ask my husband about that Remington 870. He's my gun expert. I do know that I like my Baretta 20 gauge! It's a hoot, when I'm shooting those clay birds!

If we, as citizens, are already armed, then, in the case of a national emergency, guess what? We can be organized to defend ourselves, just as our ancestors were, (remember those farmers, shopkeepers, and blacksmiths I mentioned? They didn't start off as trained military). It's not really a favorite movie of mine, but they bring this case in point in "Red Dawn". Have you ever seen it?

I can't predict that we as a nation, can defend ourselves successfully, if push came to shove, in a national emergency, but wouldn't it be nice to know, that as long as we, as citizens, not just the military, are armed, we have a better chance? We may go down, but at least we can go down swinging! The same concept as being able to defend myself in my home, only on a larger scale!
