I think it is great how they have the town names on them. It is something that just says "home town" to me.
I remember when I was younger I was just amazed to find out that there is actually water in them.

Origins and usage of words... I love dictionaries and thesauri: can get totally lost. Yes, I looked up "curlew".
I am addicted to books about words and phrases: where they came from & how they were used. "pleased as punch", "keep the ball rolling", "stew in your own juices", "skeleton in the closet". I wonder about these things.
My jewel is a selection of Samuel Johnson's Dictionary. Where else do you find an entire page devoted to the word "opium"?
A "pash" is a kiss, as a noun. As a verb, to strike or crush.
chagrin (as per Mr. J): (shagreen) ill humour, vexation, fretfulness, peevishness curlew is not included (in my edition).
Maybe this could have been the answer to yesterday's Q of the day too.....

Tons of stuff. But recently, since I have been scanning old photos and documents from my mothers albums (I'm done, I'm done!) I have been fascinated by what people wrote about, how they wrote, and parts of history I didn't know much about.
The journals and letters from my ancestors dating back to about 1830 reveals some very interesting spellings of some "common" words (ocian for ocean being one of my favorites) and reflects on the level of education available then. Feat instead of feet is another.
Reading journals and daily accounts of what people did and bought is interesting. How often do you read accounts of Blacksmiths in the paper today? Then it was common. Buying and selling horses instead of cars.
Entertainment was very different, and yet the same. Skating in the winter. Reading in groups. Card games. Taking the carriage out for a spin.
An entry from one of my grandfather's journals:

You'd think that if you were going to shoot at Mrs. Penn you would at least try to miss the constable!

Mine sounds dumb but...I ahve been to Vegas three times...I love to walk around each place and just look around me. I am fascinated by the design of each place and would love to meet the people who design them and ind out how they got their inspiration.

Did you look up in the Venetian?
WOW!!!!!
We are the same way. Go more than you, but never tire of the architecture and design. See new things every time.

LOL... Power Surge, this brings to mind that bit by Jeff Foxworthy, where he was talking about his first child, and people were asking him if he video-taped the delivery, and he emphatically said: "No we did not! .. I got good some footage of the conception, but nothing on the delivery!"..
On a serious note, to me childbirth is something very personal and it should be kept that way, and if I had a wife, who's expecting a child, I wouldn't want any cameras recording anything.
