The last system I saw like that was at my in-laws' west Texas home which was in a small town. My FIL had a counter weighted door on his storm cellar which was a large buried water storage tank set on its side. The door lay flat to the ground and once the door was closed, the door was quite heavy so that tornado winds could not easily open it. As the door was pushed upward, it became lighter as the counter weights started moving downward. His counter weights were actually heavy pieces of farm equipment attached to a steel cable that ran through a pulley on a post then down to the door.
Any thing for a counter weight worked...

I was right on the bubble of bottles & aluminum cans taking over so we collected beer & pop cans to cash in. At the edge of these going out of style too got one pair of them.

There was a welding shop ( about 10 employees) in the small town a block from the high school.

One of the workers had bought a brand new Edsel hardtop( Red and White with cruiser skirts)

All us guy really admired that sharp Edsel !

I remember wearing argyle socks and always wore Thom Mcan or Sears shoes. In the 70's I wore western style boots. I could get Tony Llamas or some other brands that had tiny blems for about 20 bucks a pair. Clothes were awfully cheap back then but far better quality than cheap these days.

I remember my twin cousins (boys) eating dog biscuits from a box one day. I remember tasting one at some point. No, I didn't eat any.
