somewhere i heard that it was common practice for the folks (usually women) who were painting those tiny numbers with tiny brushes to frequently wet the brushes on the tongue to make the points fine.
That's true and many (most?) of them ended up with radium poisoning, particularly in their mouths. It made their teeth rot and fall out and then the empty tooth socket would not heal.
....molds? As in Primordial ooze? You're older than I thought Tinny. LOL! I of course know you meant (models) . I think.
When I was about 11 years old got my hand in a wringer went all the way up past my elbow almost to my shoulder. My Dad was there and hit the release. Those things were dangerous.

This was a old gas powered one on the porch.. just kept eating his arm up to the elbow.. age 6-7.. I guess his grandmother heard the ruckus.. and went out and found him passed out.. from what I remember they had to take the dang machine apart.. this was 2nd -- 3rd -- 4th grade he missed the whole year.. crushed and mangled the lower arm - hand - Last time I saw him was in the 70's.. the arm just flops around when he walks..
I remember my first year of college living in a dormitory (1968) - when we got a phone call the front desk would announce via PA system in the room "xxxx, you have a phone call on line 3". Then we would go to line 3 in the hallway (kind of like a phone booth) and take the call.
If we had a visitor the front desk would announce "xxxxx, you have a caller in the lobby".
I'm so old I remember... The USO and waiting for up to 12 hours for a long distance telephone call home from over seas..... you have 5 minutes..
