I remember breaking open a couple of old thermometers, removing the mercury and bringing it to school for Show and Tell. (The teacher fully approved, as I passed the blob of mercury around the room). I think I was in third grade. So far, no ill effects.
I'm so old I remember... Mules grinding cane that was made into syrup at the city square.
Wow! In the city square? Where was that? I remember sugar canes being ground in a round area with a hitch pole that reached out to the edge. However, I can't remember if they were using a small tractor or a mule. That was about 1958 or 59. Also, this was on a cane farm.
I used to purposely stand downwind while filling a car just to smell the gasoline. Then too, I also played with mercury. I guess I'm lucky to still be alive.

O the smell was so great...
I also drank directly from the creek... Davey Crockett drank from the creek.. just shove the algae off to the side.. This is when DDT was being used for crops...
You forgot about playing with things that went " BOOM"

Yep! It didn't matter that a cow or two were standing just upstream. I still occasionally play with things that go "boom." I also played hide and seek in the thick DDT fog wafting behind the mosquito control trucks.
I remember walking a cloud of DDT as my grandfather dusted his vegetable crops.
