You get a HIGH FIVE on that one. When my mother came from Hungary her name was Yolan and of course did not speak any English. A Hungarian who spoke some English translated the name to be Edna, which of course is wrong but she was referred to as Aunt Edna by all family members. Strange that most english words have a beginning from French, Latin, German, Spanish, Greek and probably a little Gaelic thrown in (hope I did not miss to many others). Pista sure is a odd one for Steve, Istvan. Here in Mexico they refer me as Stefhen. Such is life. Long ways from Clippity Clop to plunk..plunk. Pista

This thread has gotten really good in the last 25 or so posts and I'm sad to report that I must spread the reputation thingies around for all of you, except one. Thanks for keeping me awake at half past two, though!
I remember trains. Big trains. Long trains. Passenger trains. (sorry, but I missed the steam era) But I can still recall visiting relatives in a distant town by train. Aside from Amtrak, the passenger trains are long gone here in New England. Now, the old railroad beds are mere bike paths. Enjoyable as they may be, I think they once served a greater purpose.

I’m so old I remember getting cheese in wooden boxes.
I’m so old I remember Mom would iron cloths after hanging them on the line outside.
I’m so old I remember she had a sprinkling bottle of water to use while ironing.

Hmm. I remember the last two but can't say I ever saw cheese in wooden boxes. Yes, one of my "chores" (kids had regular ones then!) was to iron five white shirts for my Dad to wear to work the next week, and we did dry them on the line outside or in the basement (in winter), and of course the spray bottle. Pre polyester/synthetics?
Had a metal lunch box for school, also. That was if I didn't walk home for lunch.......all without a cell phone to say, "where are you, I am here, I am late, etc.".......
