You can have a tree with a theme, we do ours in angels with burgundy, gold and mauve. What do you like? There is always the traditional red and green.

Ye, hang some little pieces of decoration. The traditional color is mainly red and green, and put something under the tree, a lot of gifts and presents. it would be the point makes your tree most attractive .
Or you may add some piece of wood as i did with my christmas

ILNC that sounds lovely!
When I decorate the Christmas tree, I get a running start like Buddy the Elf and jump! Just kidding just kidding!!
DH and DD2 are in charge of the tree, so we have colored mini lights and little shiny glass ornaments with cute designs and sparklies on them. Some look like little wrapped glass candies - So cute.
I'm in charge of outside, so I did white mini lights, gold (non breakable) ornaments on the pine trees, found a gorgeous Christmas flag, wreaths with gold ribbon and window candles. Do they do window candles in other parts of the country?

I always start with the lights. I have a boatload of mini multi colored lights for the tree. I start at the bottom and work my way around & up. Once the lights are on the topper goes on. My folks always put the topper on last, but I find that I knock too many things off.
I am anal about the ornaments. Can't have a red one near another red one, or near a red light. Can't have breakable stuff down too low because of the pets. Tinsel goes on last. I only used 8 boxes this year because I have a smaller tree than usual.

I like the picks. They make decorating it VERY easy and add a different touch that designers use. They also help fill in dead spaces. Also get the twirly ones that stick out a bit. And just like decorating the house, use fewer items but getting larger items. Find the oversized ornaments and get at least 5 or 7 of each. I did not even use regular Christmas ornament balls this year. If you like angels or santa's get several really big ones to put on the tree then some smaller ones to help set them off.

Other than I start the lights from the top and work my way down instead of from the bottom up, we do the same thing Evey I also intersperse the colored bulbs to keep too many reds, golds, blues, greens, etc. from being too close to each other. I also have smaller bulbs for the top of the tree and graduate the size downward. I'm VERY picky about decorating the tree. I hate crappy tacky strings of popcorn. (my sister used to make those when we were kids and put them proudly on the tree and I'd swing by when everyone had gone to bed and pull that crap off the tree and burn it in the fireplace). They always blamed the dog.
I also use a zillion mini colored lights, but though I love tinsel, because of the cats, I'm afraid to use it, though I love the look. I really like an old fashioned looking tree with hundreds of glass ornaments in brilliant colors and a galaxy of colored lights with tinsel. I put my top ornament on at the end of putting the lights on.
