I cannot stand the way people use a singular contraction to describe a plural verb or noun!!!!! That contraction is "There's", and it's misused as in; "There's ten people who...", "There's houses going up over there...", etc.
What happened to the contraction "there're"?
Now for the singular contraction "there's" to describe a compound subject where the first element is singular, I can live with that...ex. "There's a man and a woman...".
But "there's" is misused on the news, by politicians, almost all the media, regular people everywhere, and many of these people are clearly highly educated. I hate it...but like I've said...it's too pervasive to allow it to become too annoying...
I'm trying to ignore it

Not to turn this thread into the "spelling/word usage thread", but here are my pet peeves:
affect/effect
accept/except
assure/ensure/insure
nauseated/nauseous ("Nauseated" means that you're feeling sick to your stomach. "Nauseous" means that you make someone else sick to THEIR stomach!)
media/medium ("Media" is the plural of "medium", but it's used as a singular noun all the time.)
All of these are misused constantly on a daily basis in newspapers, magazines, and of course, books. I know there are more important things in life, but I just want to run down the street screaming!
Oh, and Merry Christmas Eve!!!

How about people who say: "Let's come to a happy medium..." and not, "Let's come to a happy median!"
(watches poor Sandy run screaming faster now down the street )

Staying on topic, I still vote for tornadoes with an "E", but here are a few of my pet peeves.
"It is HER that will win the game."
"Is Bob there?" Answer ~ "This is HIM."
"SHE ~ HE : not HER ~ HIM
Sean Hannity always says she/her and he/him wrong.
If you live in Texas, you'll hear, "Let him do it HISSELF."
It isn't important, but it does make one want to run and scream! That is too funny!!

earthquakes for sure. they ALWAYS strike with ABSOLUTELY ZERO WARNING, you NEVER know where it is going to hit, how strong it will be, and worse, practically NOTHING stands a chance, especially in a big earthquake; not elevated highways, not bridges/overpasses, and not even concrete parking garages. and when a concrete structure crumbles, especially with you in it, your chances of survival are like one in a million. even though i have never experienced a big earthquake before, i have seen plenty what earthquakes can do. tornadoes are not much better, for even though they are not as unpredictable as earthquakes, you basically never know how strong a tornado is going to be until after it hits an urban area. and even though sturdy concrete buildings stand a better chance, they still can get extremely heavy damage, especially if the tornado is an F-5. (capable of winds as high as 318 miles per hour! ) i'd VERY MUCH rather go through a hurricane. (but not too close to the ocean). at least with a hurricane, you know how strong it is, where it might go, and you have time to cover up your windows, secure loose backyard items, move your valuables to the safest spot in your house, and even better, the only structures that ever really get destroyed by hurricane winds are those shanty wood frame and manufactured structures. (since when has a solid steel/concrete building, other than warehouses with wide span roofs/walls, ever been leveled by hurricane force winds?!!)

Earthquakes are the worst for their sheer unpredictability. With that said, I've always been somewhat fascinated by earthquakes coming from the East Coast where the ground stays still.

How about living through a melt down at 3 Mile Island. After living through that, they rest are a breeze...

Yikes! I'm glad I haven't had to do that. That was a terrible happening years ago.
