On my side of the fence; I have a concession and yes I have a tip jar near the register.
The tips are for the cooks meaning myself and my son, both chefs there. Since we cook and deal only with food preparations, we have no contact with the customers unless we have a question regarding their meal. Lots of times when I see my regular customers, I automatically start cooking up what I know is their favorite hence, they drop a few extra dollars in the jar and they know I'll get it.
What happens to the tips?
At the end of the day we divide all monies between myself and my son.

It depends on the venue and circumstances. So I might toss some change into a tip jar if it's warranted.

I have a favorite little café’ that I go to from time to time and they have a tip jar at the pass-through window of the kitchen for the cooks. If my order was prepared just the way I wanted it (breakfast eggs) then I’m happy to give them a buck, as well not forgetting the waitress for her good service. Funny thing ~ everyone working there knows you by name after you come in a few times and they address you by your name as well. I think they go out of their way to make a point of it and it gives you a good feeling that you as a customer matters to them. Kind of like Cheers

I think I was hearing the news correctly the other day when I thought they said that Starbucks lost a lawsuit about the tipjar. Yeah,,, that tip jar that you might drop money into for the employee who helped make your visit and day “very special” wasn’t getting the money ~ it was going to the “management” of the store instead of the counter help. I need to validate this story but from what I thought I heard this was happening at many of the Starbucks if not all of them. Tips are for employees who make the visit better not management in the back office to the work that they do.
I alway give 20% to waiters/waitresses for good service, part of their income is based on this.

I saw something about that. A multi-million dollar settlement if I remember correctly.
I was off a little (went and found this). It was not multi-millions, it was $100 million dollars! Oh the tips! 5 bucks for a cafe latte whatever and you dropped how much in the tip jar? Some people simply have too much money.

I have always ignored tip jars, except for one coffee shop I go to on a regular basis - I have gotten to know them and I do donate to their cause.
