After reading that Magnum Mike's relationships lasted between 4 and 6 years, I don't feel so weird telling everyone that dh and I were slow movers. We got engaged after about 4 1/2 years and were married a year and a half later.
Our relationship just kind of evolved. We were friends first, and I'm not quite sure how it got more serious. We never officially dated. We just liked spending time with each other, often in the company of friends, pursuing our interests. Dh's family was convinced he'd never get married, so I was actually warned off. It was rather funny because we were already planning the wedding when the warning was issued; we just weren't ready to tell anyone.
No, not my first... we met at work...I was 22 when we married and he was 19. We were friends for about 6 months before dating... got engaged in April, married that Oct...14 years ago. Yes, I would do it again.
This is awesome...tlb71...my story is sooooo similar to yours. Yes, I did marry my first sweetheart; was engaged before but he wasn't like my now hubby. And we too met at work, he's younger than me, we were friends for 6 months too and we got married one year after we got together. We just celebrated our first wedding anniversary. And yes, I would do it all over again. Like Northwoods Voyager said so eloquently, I cherish my mate and vice versa. We have been through some very rough times in our small time of togetherness but I find this has solidifed our foundation as Mr. and Mrs. H.
I didn't marry my first sweetheart, but he was the first one that I was really absolutely crazy about and it was so obvious to me from the start that he felt the same way.
There is majic in a relationship when both partners love each other as friends and sweethearts that just bubbles out in their gestures, their laughs, their hugs. This is what my DH had from day #1 that was missing in my other relationships.
He asked me to marry him the same week we met, I said "yes" 5 weeks later, and we got married after only 5 months of knowing one another. It had to be right!
Here we are 39 years later with 4 wonderful sons, and 6 grandchildren. What a ride this has been. Lots of lean years, lots of busy years, and now retirement with 2 best friends making plans for the day with each other.
We met when we were 12, were friends, dated in high school, lost contact in college and reconnected after college by a strange twist of events. He had a long time girlfriend and I had just gotten out of a long term relationship. When we reconnected, within three days we were talking about getting married and a few months later we ran off to the courthouse to tie the knot.
16 years, 6 kids, 2 dogs and a cat later we are happier than ever.

Our story is similar. 42 years ago, we "went steady" in the 8th Grade, did not see each other through high school but got back together in college. Next Monday, we will have been married for 34 years!
Congratulations Charley,,,,, 34 years with the same spouse is unusual. My wife wasn’t my first sweetheart but she has become my life long love with 38 years now, and I wouldn’t change a bit of it ~ the good or the bad – always seemed to make us stronger.
