hmm
how is a "philosopher" who spends his years reading and writing in isolation contributing to the world community? on the other hand, what are 2 things we absolutely need in the world? -health and order
i value doctors and lawyers WAY more than any aloof, self-proclaiming philosopher

Lawyers are way overrated, especially the ones who become politicians. This country was in much better shape when the legislators were mostly farmers.

I thank God everyday for my neurologist, you cannot use a "flow chart" to find MS, it is a very hard disease to DX, so much so that three doctors before my neurologist tried to DX me with pinched nerves, and they were drastically wrong.

I'd have to attorney's. There are many good ones but they are so numerous that they have become leaches on society and have ruined the american legal system especially the civil part. Bring a lawsuit a majority of tmes means looking for a settlement and the big winners are always the lawyers. Many times people will sell their souls for a settlement of 10,000 to 25000 dollars.Surveys show it is the most disrespected profession time after time.

Most "artists" - I mean really, some of the things that is called "art" is nothing but pure laziness from a talentless hack.
Fashion Designers - Well the ones that design outrageous clothes that nobody will wear. I have no problem with the job they do because more often than not they are doing something they love. I just laugh at how important these people think they are.
Pharmaceutical Sales - I worked in finance in hospitals and insurance companies and found that most of these salespeople don't know much about healthcare or drugs in general and are grossly overpaid. In speaking with them in these hospitals, most reps had a degree in history or English for chrissakes! Anybody can become a sales rep as long as you have looks and charisma I guess. Sort of like a TV anchor. What really bugs me about these people is they drive up the costs of drugs with the salaries they "earn" and money they spend on schmoozing doctors under the guise of "sales meetings".
Project Managers - Now this is a very loose term and am not targeting all project managers because I feel in many industries, project managers are vital. I work in finance for a huge financial services company and last year we employed a bunch of project managers who really are more "process" people. All they do is go around and get information on areas that may need process improvements. How are they supposed to add value when they only see a fraction of what goes on? They are grossly overpaid as well, but that is our company's fault. Everyone here is unhappy with the "results" of their work and feel they have added nothing of value, yet these "project managers" strut around thinking they are saving the company. It's quite funny.
Communications people - A Communications degree is ranked just above "General Studies" and is usually the last ditch effort of someone to stay in college before they flunk out. Why some departments employ communications people is beyond me since many of the employees of the department have an MBA or higher and don't need someone to write for them. Waste of money.
Politicians - Enough said.
Hollywood - I can appreciate acting talent and some actors/actresses are terrific. I even have no issue with the money they make because it's fueled by demand. However, it's the attitudes many of these people have outside of filming. Seriously, you aren't doing that much to make some silly demands to make your "tough" life easier.
Oh, and regarding doctors: well, when I go into surgery for something I want them to be very happy and well paid and feel they are worth every penny. I make a mistake at work, I look stupid and may get the boss ticked at me. Doctors make a mistake and someone may die or end up with worse damage than what they already have. Talk about pressure.

Sure, some of them save lives. Some of them spend all day looking at snotty nosed kids. It doesn't require great ingenuity--it requires knowing a few procedures really well and doing them over and over again. Plenty of other people in other professions save lives too, but they don't expect people to cowtow.

This thread is hilarious!!
MD's are the most over rated?? Only until you or a loved one really need a good one I suppose?
MD's spend most of their time doing paperwork?? Whose fault is that?? Insurers and the government.....
Some save lives?? I would say ALL save lives at some point. That pediatrician who looks at "snotty nosed kids all day" will be the same pediatrician that picks up an early meningitis....
The dermatologist that looks at benign skin tags all day and then biopsies the suspicious looking mole that turns out to be a melanoma.
Some are super smart, some aren't???? Welcome to the human race, care to name a profession where that ISN'T the case? At least in medicine there is a certain bar that has to be reached in terms of prior education, MCAT's and competition that ensures only a certain baseline IQ will be practicing...
Just memorize a few procedures, lather, rinse and repeat?? Right....
There is a reason medicine is as much "art" as "science". No two patients always present the same way with the same problem making diagnosis often more challenging than one would expect.
Surgeries, despite the reference to mechanics, are not like at Jiffy Lube. Until you have tried to dissect out the layers of tissues that separate the outside world from ones appendix, spleen, gallbladder or ventured inside a knee joint with an arthroscope....you have NO idea how DIFFERENT a procedure that you have done dozens if not hundreds of times can be, add to that the fact that you have a living breathing body on the table....
No ingenuity? No creativity? Folks here have no idea what goes on in an operating room if they don't think creativity and ingenuity do not play a role in surgery....
Funny stuff here!

Thank you. As one of those "overrated" dermatologists, I can honestly say that despite the occasional negative attitude toward physicians, and all the current headaches involved in the practice of medicine, it all goes away when I hear a melanoma patient say "Thanks, doctor."
When it comes to occupations requiring advanced degrees and/or extremely high-level technical skills, those who whine about them being overrated are simply showing their blissful ignorance.
