I agree San Phlegmatico.
But there is one difference, between a mechanic and doctor. A doctor must go through a residency which is a internship that involves sleep depravation and learning and isolation, also known as brainwashing. To keep them from ever thinking out side of the box. Also, most mechanics are not drug dealers, but all doctors are.

Oh, for the old days of residency and being sleep-depraved!

Not only "depraved" but isolated as well. I wonder when they let the residents out of isolation that I work with daily because they seem to integrate well with others......

MD's vs Mechanics
Most MD's I've met are arrogant compared to most mechanics I've met.

But aren't car mechanics merely flow chart followers as well? What texts have they read to gain their expertise? My sense is they get their learnin' on the street, by word of mouth, trial and error.
MDs and car mechanics... Both wear a smock. One's dirtied by dirt; the other, blood. Both wear pocket protectors with weird implements jutting up out of their pockets.
I'm not seeing much difference. Well, maybe the MDs have better social graces and haircuts.

I'm not a MD but I'm sorry, I will have to disagree with you on this one. I will not go to a doctor and have them trial and error. If a mechanics make an error he/she can fix it but if a doctor makes an error, it's life that we are talking about.
I do have to agree that car mechanics doesn't get the respect that they respect though. On the other hand, they still make very good money compare to most others.

Becoming a MD is not easy. Most of my friends are pre-med and they must work extremely hard to even be considered for medical school (participating in many organizations, studying and acing their MCATS, getting 3.7's or higher while taking classes like organic chemistry and physiology, etc.). And this is just the beginning of the journey. I can't imagine what awaits the ones that eventually get into medical school and what comes beyond that.
However, I think most of the other professions in the healthcare field (nurses, pharmacists, physician's assistants, physical therapists, etc.) are underrated but they are still very respectable fields.

I would have to say Celebrities and Professional atheletes are over-rated.
Teachers and Police Officers are undervalued and under-rated.
Great teachers are what motivated me to continue my education. Even to this day (20 years beyond graduating High School), I keep in touch with the teachers that I have that are still alive.
In the eyes of an outsider, the Physician is over-rated. It is unfortunate that this is the perception. However, it is through self sacrifice, intense studying and delaying personal and financial gratification that we have been trained to help others.
