Default Todays question Tuesday 5-13-08

Good morning everyone
Ok rushing here , my internet was out all morning and just came back up so I wanted to get this posted before I run out in *gasp* 15 mins for the last "butterfly garden" class of the year

Thanks to one of our loyal posters for todays questions lol how did they know in advance I would be having "computer issues" and could use the help
So I am going to have to wait till I get back to see how you answer

Todays question:

What do you do to stay in shape?

(I am hoping to see my crew from the exercise thread posting)

Bonus question for us middle-aged folks: Do you still do the same thing you did when you were younger to stay in shape?

Today in history:
May 13, 1918 1st U.S. airmail stamps issued (24 cents )
May 13, 1950 Diner's Club issues its 1st credit cards
May 13, 1954 "Pajama Game" opens at St. James Theater New York City for 1063 performances - 7 1/2 cents doesn't mean a heck of a lot,7 1/2 cents doesn't mean a thing..... (yeah how scary is it that I know the songs from the show

Word of the day:
umbrage \UHM-brij\, noun:
1. Shade; shadow; hence, something that affords a shade, as a screen of trees or foliage.
2. a. A vague or indistinct indication or suggestion; a hint.
3. b. Reason for doubt; suspicion.

hmmm maybe thats how the phrase "shadow of a doubt" came to be

Today is :
National Fruit Cocktail Day
and
National Cough Drop Day
lets not forget
National I Just Called to Say I Love You Day

Karla, up here, in the frozen tundra, it's harder to stay in shape. When I'm working at the race track I walk a lot. For those who have never been on a drag strip. The surface is so sticky it's like walking with 10 lb weights on your ankles. I probably did about 3 miles Sat. We are not open in rain or cold. On other days I have a gym about a mile from the house. Now that it's warm I think I'll walk there. Normally Mon Wed& Fri.My exercise program, BBS (before bypass surgery), was mostly eating Oreos and milk. When my cardio guy heard my diet he wondered how I lived 61 years before I had a heart attack. Hey I think that's better than having him scratching his head, at my funeral, saying. "He was in such good shape. I don't understand what happened".

I better call my wife and tell her i love her, buy some fruit cocktail and cough drops and get ready for work tonight.

I swim and walk.
At 53, I am probably in better shape now than when I was half my age--I never did *anything* back then.

You'd never guess how hard I work to stay in this shape -- round.

Actually, I suffer from a little known autonomic disorder, and am rather limited in what I can and can't do. I do go to Cardiac Rehab to exercise, 3X weekly. Good thing I have a sense of humor, because it's enough to make a formerly very physical person dammit c-r-y. I get on the treadmill for 10 minutes, the recumbent bike, for 10 minutes, and have worked up to rowing for 10 minutes, which I really like. We stretch and warm-up before workouts, and stretch again and cool-down afterwards. The other days of the week I am supposed to be walking but I don't like to walk alone.

For exercise, I still work in the yard -- sometimes too hard, but I love it. Instant gratification. I still do my own housework.

I just recently gave my nice mountain bike to my daughter, and I am hoping Santa will bring me one of those grown-up tricycles. I think they're actually kinda' cool. I can s-o see me cutting wheelies around the neighborhood. I'll show these other tykes a thing or two. . .

National Fruit Cocktail Day? UGH, but I've hated that stuff since I was a kid. We'll be eating enough of it when we're all in nursing homes, won't we? And I'd just as soon not celebrate National Cough Drop Day, but National I Just Called to Say I love You Day? Yeah. . . pucker up, or turn your cheek. Here comes a kiss.

Oh I wish I could say I was still in great shape. Used to walk 5 miles every morning. Now with severely arthritic knees it's not happening.

Also think the move away from my kids and grands has not helped as I feel more down than up most of the time. And I've gained 20 lbs. since moving here 3 yrs. ago!!! Not much healthy food in MN plus I'm a "when I'm down-I eat" person.

Fruit cocktail-I'm with RDS on that!! UGH

Todays question:

What do you do to stay in shape? That depends what shape your talking about, I'm not sure what kinda shape i'm in, kinda round with skinny legs, maybe like a pumpkin with toothpick legs.

(I am hoping to see my crew from the exercise thread posting)

Bonus question for us middle-aged folks: Do you still do the same thing you did when you were younger to stay in shape? I still do the same things that got me in this shape

Up until January of this year when I had a physical because I was so tired, and the bottom had dropped out of my otherwise hyperactive body.. Anyway seems the ole ticker was too weak to continue my former 65 years of hyperactivity and strenuous yardwork, housepainting, etc..I do limited non strenuous exercises now and stay mad at myself for having to slow down
Anyhoo, I love fruit cocktail..I don't like coughdrops..
In keeping with the latest "National Day of"...I love you all

Good morning, all.

Actually, until about 5 years ago, I never excercised. I'd start a program and within a month, I guarantee it was gone.

I started out at Curves and did that for 2 years. After 2 years, I knew I needed to get into something a bit more challenging, so I joined a gym where I started doing weight machines and small free weights. SInce moving to Florida about 10 months ago, I haven't been as diligent with diet or exercise and am now trying to correct that. You see, I've gained 20 lbs. since I got here. Since last week, I've gotten more serious about it. Eating better, doing weights at our little gym 3 days/week for 30 minutes and am now riding my bike back and forth to the gym and on days I don't do weights, I've been riding my bike all over the community for about 30 minutes. I haven't seen the scale do anything yet, but I am feeling better and I don't think I look quite so "whale-ish" in my bathing suit. Oh, I also head to the pool most afternoons. I don't do laps or anything, but I float around, moving my arms and legs, chatting with the residents. It's no big deal, but it's better than sitting on my sofa, watching tv or reading and making my way to the fridge.

Since it's an "official" Nat'l day....I just called to say I love y'all...sorry, Stevie.

By eating, round is a shape!!!! We bike ride in the summer and I walk the dog everyday. Dogs are good training partner, they hold you accountable. If you are skipping out on a walk they let you know!!!
