If someone immortal gets life in jail, is it forever?
This was something I randomly begin to wonder. How long is a life sentence? 99 years? Indefiniate? What if someone outlives 99 years or is immortal and lives forever? Will they eventrually let him out?

Well, in Canada life is about six years if you murder your parents and are underage, and if an adult who commits first degree murder and is given a 'life' sentence, that person can apply for parole after 25 years. If you're going to murder someone, do it there. I guess we all interpret "life" differently

I always thought a life sentence was 25 years. So in essence if you get two consecutive life sentences, you're getting fifty years. I always thought it was done that way because if you go to jail at age 18 for 25 years (aka Life), you don't get out until you're 43 (go at 30, you're 55) and so on. You've missed so much of a "lifetime". Then again, I could be talking out of my butt, however, I did hear somewhere that it was 25 years (my husband also just said that too) and that is how I rationed why it was 25.

My sister's husband was sentenced to life without the chance of parole in WV. This means he will be in prison until he dies. I do believe it can vary from state to state. WV has no death penalty. It may be different in a state that does have the death penalty.

At 99 years, come out to what? If I'm ever in prison at 99 years of age (LOL), keep me as I'd be accustomed to the place. I don't do change good.

It depends on the State, generally, "life" means "life". If the sentence was "20 years to life", I believe that the convict would be eligible for parole after 20 years. If parole is never granted then they're in prison until they die. The only other way a life sentence can be reduced is if the government (usually the Governor) steps in and grants a pardon or commutes the sentence to time served.
If someone is sentenced to "life" on federal charges they're in prison for "life". The federal government abolished paroles for life sentences in the '80's. The only way out of a federal life sentence is by a pardon from the President.

I think the guy would eventually escape. Or the prison system would collapse (eternity IS a long time). If he's immortal, he'd get out eventually. Since he wouldn't have to worry about getting killed, I think he'd be more comfortable making escape attempts. He'd probably also have the patience to wait until the right moment.
If I was immortal and in jail, I'd use the time to learn as much as I could about every subject I could. I'd learn to make stuff, program computers, escape techniques, martial arts, everything. Then, when I got bored, I'd figure out how to escape- legally (appeals, etc.) or illegally. I'd know I'd get out eventually- if nothing else an earthquake or other disaster would hit and I'd flee in the ensuing chaos.
