Todays question Monday 6-09-08
Good morning everyone
Happy Monday
When I was researching for the "today is" section of the thread and saw it was National Best Friends Day it got me thinking
Having moved so many times when I was growing up(military brat) it made long term friendships difficult. I have often heard folks mention "we have been friends since childhood"
So I thought hmmm what a good idea for
Todays question:
How "old" is the longest friendship you have had with someone?
Extra credit: How often do you see or talk with them?
Since I made up the "Run through the Sprinkler Day" I should ask this
Bonus Question: When was the last time you "ran through a sprinkler"
lol 2 subjects for the price of one today
Today in history:
June 9,1790 - The first copyright for a book was given to "The Philadelphia Spelling Book".
June 9, 1822 Charles Graham patents false teeth
June 9, 1958 "Purple People Eater" by Sheb Wooley hits #1
Word of the day:
raconteur \rack-on-TUR\, noun:
One who excels in telling stories and anecdotes.
Today is:
National Strawberry-Rhubarb Pie Day - no surprise here I have never tried this
and
National Best Friends Day
and because I can it is
National Run Through A Sprinkler day !!!!!!

I'd have to say my longest friendship, was 40 years......it ended when she passed on July 17 2000...she was my mother....my mentor, my inspiration and my best friend.
The second, would have to be 30 years, with my niece, we still enjoy going to lunch and talking for hours and laughing.
Sprinklers? Nope, never did that.

45 years. My mom was my best friend until she died.
21 years. My dad until he died.
14 years. My dog until she died.
Such is the way of this military brat.
Who needs a sprinkler?
During the summer, I don a bathing suit to play with my dog and I water the garden while holding my hose so no water is wasted - it goes right where I want it to go. But as soon as I feel uncomfortable, that hose is turned on me and drenches my hair, first. Then I shake my head and sprinkle the immediate area while I continue much more comfortably.
That's how I spell r e l i e f !

I have friends all the way back from high school and we still keep in touch, whether by email, phone or snail mail. A few of us have reunited after all these years. Guess a couple of my friends go all the way back to 1970.
I had one high school 'crush' who passed on though in 1990 (he's the one who got me started in theater and photography and pulled strings for me to get me some parts in shows) and another who was a very close friend of the family, who passed on from some type of bone cancer.
Sprinklers? Can I run through the garden section at my work when they water all the plants, will that count? Im off today so cant really get in trouble for it!

50 years for my longest friendship......we dont see each other very often anymore....we exchange xmas cards and perhaps see one another every couple of years. We were close friends in HS back in the 50's; she was also close to my parents and that connection kept us in touch, especially when they were near the end.

How "old" is the longest friendship you have had with someone?
42 years ago, I was in the 8th grade chorus with a girl with whom I started to converse. Today, some of you know her as Mrs. CMTAD. We've been married for 34 years and friends for 42!
Extra credit: How often do you see or talk with them?
Not often enough! I'd spend every waking moment with her if I could - but she still works.
Since I made up the "Run through the Sprinkler Day" I should ask this. Bonus Question: When was the last time you "ran through a sprinkler"
Yesterday. I didn't run. I walked around the block three times yesterday and one of my neighbors was running his watering system for the lawn. There was a nice mist being gently blown out toward the street and I walked through it and enjoyed the feeling.

I kept up with some high school friends for a long time. Regretably, we have lost touch now. The longest friendship I have now is with the couple we consider our "best friends" and we have known them about 14-15 years now. We see them frequently. We go out to eat or something with them usually weekly or at the very least, every 2-3 weeks. Even when we don't get together, we stay in pretty close contact with them through e-mail, phone calls etc. We also go to the same church and that helps us stay connected because we also see each other there.
We also are close friends with another couple we have known about 10-12 years and we see them frequently as well.

How "old" is the longest friendship you have had with someone?
I was 5 when we moved across the street from my friend Julie's grandparents. My first memory of her is watching her ride her bike -- 24" wheels and no training wheels, while I was still using training wheels on my 20" wheeled bike -- while wearing a nurse's costume. I still giggle and she still blushes when I remind her of that. A year or so later her family moved to the next street. Like little girls often do, we had a tempestuous friendship with fights, jealousies, and temper tantrums. For awhile in high school we went in different directions, but after I went away to college (she stayed home to go to school) we reconnected and have been close again despite a difference of a couple thousand miles.
Extra credit: How often do you see or talk with them?
Thank goodness for e-mail. We also talk on the phone a few times a year, and when she visits her mom once a year I try to get back to the old 'hood to see her.
Bonus Question: When was the last time you "ran through a sprinkler"
Many years ago a friend bought me a "flappin' flamingo" sprinkler, which I have to my nephew and niece. It's still flappin', and every time I visit during the summer we crank it up.

My longest continuous friendship is with my best girl friend, Beth, 17 years. We met the summer before our sophmore year of highschool. We talk on the phone a few times each month and since we moved away from eachother we usually see each other about once a year.
Recently I reconnected with a friend from junior high, Blythe, we were best friends for 3 years and then had a falling out when we were 15. Nearly 15years later we ran into each other in a random place and have since rekindled our friendship. We hardly ever talk but sometimes email eachother and recently spent the day together touring the aquarium in Atlanta where she now lives.
The funny thing is that all 3 of us were good friends for a year before the "falling out" happened with Blythe and then Beth and her became best friends for 2 years before they had a "falling out" too. We are now planning a mini reunion for this summer for all 3 of us to spend a weekend together. I expect it to be a little weird at first but after 15years of being apart I think we all have matured beyond our previous differences.
On a side note my DH and I celebrated 15years of bestfriendship just this past weekend. We waited 5 years to get married so we have 2 anniversaries.
Oh and I run thru the sprinkler frequently with my kids, at least once a week we are playing in it while watering the lawn.

Longest continuous friendship?
Aside from a childhood friend of mine, that I see sporadically for whatever reason -- our lives just go in different directions -- I have a good friend from HS, and we manage to stay in touch, not as much as I'd like.
Probably my closest and dearest friend is one I made in college. She and I talk weekly, share email and real mail, and visit during the holidays and summers when she is away from work. Of course, I count my husband -- we met in 1973, and I have been crazy about him ever since, although we didn't marry until 1995.
I'm still working on National Ice Cream Day. I haven't had my fill of that one yet, but I suppose I could run through a sprinkler while I have a cone.
