OK, Karla with a K, 'jackass' that I can be, I say if Mr. Withakay doesn't notice this, get with your neighbors and borrow any ladders they can spare for awhile. It would be just too tempting to see if you had to fill the room before he'd say something.
My husband is just that obstinate. Or he might ask, "Hey, when did you start collecting ladders, Baby?"
If all else fails, start stacking his clean, folded laundry on the steps of the ladders -- one step for underwear, another for socks, Tshirts, shorts, so on. . . or use them as shoe shelves. . . Serve him his meals in there.

My husband is one for...ignoring things that he left out. One time he did his own load of clothes to wash, dryed them, and started taking one article out at a time from the dryer, leaving the rest in there. I gave him about 2 days, and then started complaining. Would it have been easier for me to take them out, fold them, and put them away? Yes. But this kind of crap happens ALL the time, in other situations, and I have to nip it. I have nipped other thoughtless behavior over the years, so he is improving Anyway, so he moved it to the laundry basket, and there it sat!! And it sat while I mentioned it to him daily. "yeah, I know, I'm sorry" he'd say...and then out of the head it went and he did something else. So I took the basket and dumped it outside on the lanai, waiting for him when he came home. That was the last time that he did that. And he didn't say one word either...because he knew.
If those ladders aren't in his way...he might even leave those sitting there. I say fold them and put them in his car. Or, leave them outside with a sign saying "take me, I'm free"....but first tell your husband you're doing that and if they are taken, he is not allowed to buy another one....and that will give him the chance to put them away.
Or tell him you're going to paint them bright pink with purple flowers unless he puts them away...
I know, immature and petty stuff, but sometimes that's all that will work!

Around here, finding a flat surface that is unoccupied is nearly impossible. This would just provide LOTS more space to put stuff! Those step stools, though, if you have a cat-well, you're just gonna have to stand on a chair!

I really think that you should decorate the ladder. You know, put lights on it, little ornaments, maybe stand a Santa on the top! Fake wrapped pkgs. on the steps of the ladder. Either that, or put a large hat on top and wrap a house coat/robe around the ladder and put a pair of his shoes at the bottom.
