Todays question Wednesday 8-13-08
Good morning everyone
Happy Wednesday
It is a rainy day here in NE FL
Those on the daily exercise thread know that I have been shopping for an elliptical machine. Well after weeks of research both online and at the sporting goods store I finally decided on one. I also decided to have them deliver and put it together (I heard it can take 3 or 4 hours)
It got me thinking and when that happens we end up with
Todays Question:
Do you "research" something before buying ?
Bonus Question :
What was the last item you "researched"
Extra credit:
Are you a "bring it home and put it together type" or a "theres a reason they can do it in 1/3 the time type"

I try to research on big purchases. The last time I researched was for a car and while I didn't put together the car, I am one to usually put stuff together.
Happy Underwear Day!

My wife will tell you I'm addicted to this thing. It's really work. She hasn't realized that yet. I've researched several things lately. Because of Mrs Dude's failing health we had to downsize our car. She could not open the door of our Impala when it was on the driveway. She also needs heated seats and the creature comforts she is use to. She also needs a power scooter. They were easy. We worked together on relocating to a warmer climate that still has 4 seasons. That's how I found CDF.
I am using underwear today Karla.

Last item I researched was a minivan offered on ebay. I bought it. No, wait. I stole it, but that's because the guy that had it didn't research it first, so ya gotta blame the seller. He priced it too low and I went for it.
I will do anything to keep from puttingt it together at home. I know all too well that nothing goes together the way the instructions say it will. I either buy it assembled or I don't buy it.

Karla, I research it to death and hope nothing has to be put together. One of my teachers commented that people really look around for a car, but food is one of our most expensive things and most of us just go through the grocery store throwing things in the cart. My car to run around the county has 173,000 miles on it, so I am looking for what new car we may want the next time. I finally handed our bathroom redo to a Lowes project manager. It was just too much for me and I know nothing about construction. Mr. VA is really losing sleep about this bathroom thing. We have two bathrooms now and they work, except for my sink, and we are going to tear our home apart putting in new fixtures. I will be so glad when this is finished and the bathroom is really working again. It is a little scary.

Todays Question:
Do you "research" something before buying ? I research everything before buying. I don't only do this at home, but for our clients, as well. My actual job title in our business is head of Research and Development. I research the products we use or that our clients wish to use, where to get the best price for the products we use, track trends on new building products, etc.
Bonus Question :
What was the last item you "researched" Flexible Zinc Anode Tubes for water heaters. If you have stinky water, it can often be linked to the anode tube in the heater. But let me tell ya, it's tough to replace them in the room a crawlspace affords, so we needed to research the flexible kind.

I'm the same way as Dude. I'm addicted to researching because I want to be positive that I'm purchasing the best item in my budget. My family and friends know how I am and they all contact me when they are considering something. It's a little crazy sometimes. My last item was a blackberry for my close friend. After she saw how much time I spent on comparing all similar models, she's now afraid to have me look into anything else. On the flip side, she's very happy with my recommendation though.
If it's a substantial cost, I'm researching it.

I do research most things before making a purchase. Some items I did so much research on I became an expert first and not from reading consumer reports...lol, made calls to the company, asked the right questions. Called customers if I had access to numbers, read spec sheets and a few times talked to auditors, engineers etc.
The last item I research was the lathe I purchased to make pool cues, I researched this one to death and talked with the owner of the company, he saved me hours if not days of looking online and talking with owners of the lathe.
Bonus question. It depends on how big of a job it is or if it requires specialized tools that I will never use again.
