Yes.
I've had the bad language thing happen to me at the checkout of a hardware store. I looked up in frank disbelief at this guy, he obviously was doing it semi-on-purpose as a part of his bada$$ persona.
His girlfriend nudged him and said something to him--he shrugged her off and continued his cellphone conversation.
I don't think all people "fail to realize" they are in public.
Many of them know darn well, but adamantly reject that social nicety.
Being considerate, for them, is not just unwanted inconvenience--it has no place in their lifestyle.

I think it boils down to rude people are going to be rude and cell phones give them the opportunity to do so. If a person is polite, you don't know they own a cell phone. People who lack class use them in public. People who have class, do not.

Here in California in July 2008, we are going to start having to use headsets or phone installations in cars. Right now as of this writing, it's April.
I swear I have noticed driving to and from work in the last three weeks (18 miles) a major increase of people on cellphones in cars. Like, make sure the last few conversations without a bluetooth device are the best ones of your life.

Reminds me of when I was still married. My hubby and I took our son out to a fairly nice resturaunt. There was a table full of young guys right across from us. They started out loud but not offensive. Well, after a while one of them started talking on his cell about his sexual experience with some girl ( very explicit),he went on and on for a good 10 minutes, hubby looked at me and got up, and I thought, oh no, here it comes, he's going to jail. He walked over to the table, told the guy on the phone to hang up ( the guy did it) and to keep his filthy details to himself or take it outside, he explained that if he started talking on the cell again there would be a big problem. None of them said a word to my hubby they just looked around at each other. Hubby walked away, sat down and we ate our dinner. They were very quiet after that. On their way out, one of them came over to apologize for his friends behavior.
Amazing how some people just don't get it !
