When we moved to FL, we wanted cell phones only and never looked back. We have high speed internet thru our cable co. The only con for us would be if a major hurricane or big storm went thru and knocked out the towers we'd have no way to contact family to let them know we're ok unless the power and cable were still up and we could email them.

Both are needed!
The reverse 911 calls are important and just one of several good reasons for a landline phone. Landlines seem to have more calling capabilities without blocked calls due to an emergency in the area. This is to say that the volume of traffic (calls being made) that a company processes his higher in a landline service then a cell sight in most cases. When there is a local weather emergency (Calif earthquake a few weeks ago) people on cells didn’t get calls made because of too many using the service at one time.
I’d hate to think that I’d have an emergency at home during the night, reach for the cell and find the battery is dead! However I can reach for the extension phone on the nightstand and call out 99.9999% of the time and get a completed call, my cell has a dead battery 20% of the time. Some cell phones don’t show your ID location to the 911 center when emergency calls are made from them thus there is always a question as to where you are to send the help needed. Cell phones don’t always have cell tower coverage, guess that didn’t need to be said as we have all had that happen.
Landlines and cell phones are both needed for good reasons, each have a special use and come in handy when you’re in need. I can live without both ~ but why do I not want to have the service that both provide at home and away? They both provide good service and are needed.
You’re other option is take neither landline or cell phone and have a payphone installed out front of the house by the curb. You save money, and yet you can always run outside in an emergency, it’s just not convenient or wise.

Your points are well taken, and I agree that it would be best to have both at this stage in cell phone technology. However, I'm really careful about keeping my cell charged at all times and keep the phone on the night stand. We've been very lucky w/our carrier and have not yet been without "bars" enough to call or talk. I did my research on them and I think I came up with the best one for our needs. Granted, in times of storms and other emergencies, that could change very easily.
Having worked in Customer Service and worn a phone on my ear 8 hours a day, I've often threatened not to have a phone at home at all, but I know that would really be a bit on the crazy side.
But I do appreciate your thoughts.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been talking with someone who is at home on the cell phone and the their battery goes dead or they say just a minute I have to plug into a power outlet before we get cut off.
I’ve also notice that the voice quality of a cell phone call is less then a landline phone most of the time. They cut in and out while the other person is talking and moving around, also subject to static and noise from electrical service as they are driving.
Everyone has different needs and use, so one or the other ~ and possibly both should be considered.

Absolutely.
My mom's cell phone is terrible, so I try to call on her landline. I find the newer phones work a whole lot better than those from even 3 or 4 years ago. Technology advances, right?

We use only cellphones. With a family plan like ours we have really no need for a home line.

Dropping Your Home Phone & Going Cell Only
|
Hmmm... everytime I dropped my home phone, it broke, so I just ended up getting a new one... But my cell phone is more reliable, I've dropped it lots of times and it's still working..
Actually, I'd like to have both a land line and a cell phone. It never hurts to have a back up if one fails.
