Don't hide the beer. As long as you're not guzzling 40's in the classroom, then who cares? It's just a job, you have no obligations outside of work. Hell, my first beer was at 6 years old. But that's not the issue. The issue is the role you play. Do not confuse what roles you play at work and outside of work. Keep 'em separate.

I have no kids of my own. I do have step-kids, but they're grown adults. IMO, I'd think you were human, It's not like you're walking the streets passing out on park benches and I'm assuming you have made arrangements for a designated driver.

You're on your own time; you're allowed to do whatever you want (within the law, of course) and if a parent of one of your students sees you and doesn't understand that... well then that's their burden to carry and I'd suggest they dismount from their high horse and join reality.

JMO!

FWIW... I'd have thought a lot more of my teachers had I seen them acting like a regular human being.

As long as you're not inebriated, I don't see a problem with you having a beer during your "off" time. I'm sure these kids' parents aren't hiding their drinks when they have barbecues at home with the kids.

Now, I'd like to say, if you're teaching in a private Christian school or some institution where drinking would be frowned upon period, that's a different story.

I just had another thought about this. What would your principal think? Because at the end of the day, even if you come across a parent of one of your students who doesn't like it, there's not much they can do about it except bring it up with the principal, right? And if your principal is a reason person, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about. Again, if a parent thinks less of you for it, they're being unreasonable and you don't need their approval anyway. They'll just have to live with it.

Again... it's her free time. Why would the Principal's opinion matter either?

The way I see it, I wouldn't care if she were a stripper on the weekends, as long as Monday-Friday 8-3 she taught my kid how to properly do fractions, or configure sentences properly (or whatever she might teach) and she didn't bring her pole into the classroom and give lessons or free shows. And in turn I won't take my kid to the club she "works" at on the weekends.

If the parents are worried about having their kids see someone drinking a beer, than I say it's the parents problem and they shouldn't take them somewhere where alcohol is being served. Stay home and shelter the kiddies as much as possible. It's like taking your kids to Vegas and complaining about everyone walking around with alcohol and how the kiddies can't stand in the casino while Mom & Dad gamble and there's scantily clad females everywhere and little Ricky might see a boobie or something. Der! It's Vegas! Don't want the kiddies to see that stuff, than it's simple, you don't take them there.

And FIR, prim2007, I went to private Christian school my entire education and those that preached it were the biggest hypocrites of all. My Headmaster (aka Principle) was sloshed daily by 2pm, like clock work. I'd have appreciated and respected it a lot more if they'd practiced what they preached.

Well the principal could be an unreasonable person and give her a hard time for it. It would be unfair but stranger things have happened!

Husband of a teacher (we have no kids) here. I'm with the "what you do on your own time, as long as it's reasonable, is OK" faction) While we seldom run into my wife's students outside school, we don't worry about having a "cold one" out at a restaurant. Or even if we attend some outdoor event. I don't see a problem at all with it. Jfre81, you've got it right; teachers have a right to an adult life outside of the classroom. Some of my wife's colleagues get together for "Happy Hour" on Fridays. We don't have a problem with that, either. It's just that Friday night is our "date" night!

And it's their business what you do on your own time, because?

If your jumping the students or robbing banks, or driving drunk, then OK, they should raise Cain. Drinking beer at a wing ding? Naw. If they think it's their business, then you should be paid 24/7/365 at the same hourly rate you make now.

Just don't puke on their shoes...
