Uh... not really. They rely on trade, tourism and employment from the "outside" world to get by, the former two of which are luxuries for the outsiders and dependent on a healthy economy.. Even the Amish aren't completely shielded from what happens in our financial markets.

I believe you.
However, I truly believe that they (meaning the Amish Community)
(a) would do and fair much better doing WITHOUT those amenities .....then we ever could.
(b) have a better support system and resources of their community in order to survive....then we would ever have.
Let's face it....if I would be "in trouble", and face hard ship....where would I turn to?
The government, of course. (The Amish don't rely on the government to "help" them!)
Sure...I COULD turn to my community for help.....but, do or WOULD they care and/ or help?
Maybe.....maybe NOT.
The Amish rely solely on their tight knit community, in order to solve, resolve and search for resources and help.
And those are facts, that people can't deny, and people like me only dream about!

Not to throw a wrench into the Amish love fest, but I'm hoping everyone's aware that the Amish make tons of money by running most of this country's puppy mills. It's a dirty little secret they don't want you knowing about as you stop by their farms and buy their homemade brooms. Feel free to Google Amish puppy mills and have a nice read.
Oh the stories I could tell about the Amish. My family in PA leases out a few farms to some of them. Funny how one of the Amish Dad's used to ask to borrow their phone every night at the same time CSI came on and would stand in the hallway watching TV as he "talked" on the phone (yes, they're allowed to use things like that as long as they're not owning it themselves).

The Amish love fest, for real; "oh they know how to live blah blah blah," if you think that's how it should be done, um, why don't you do it?
So, people think that's how decent, good, honest people live? Ok, go live like that then. Done.
If you run a puppy mill, though, be waiting... real decent people will not stand for that.

That is not the discussion or the bigger picture here, IMHO.
Do I admire their close knit communities and how they help each other out? Yes
Do I admire and think, that we could actually "learn" from that? Yes
Do I want to live like them? Nope...sorry....I would never survive without the "worldly" things like my Truck, bike, stylist etc.
Nor could I imagine getting up at 3 or 4 am, in order to milk the cows and going on the field.....LOL.

I consider myself decent, good, honest and hard working....but live in a nice house, and I would never give that up without a fight.....LOL.

Or running pitbull fighting rings, for that matter.
I totally agree with you.
However, the original topic of this thread is that the Amish seem very unconcerned with our economic crisis right now.
And there are points to suggest on the reason "why". (Unlike us, being in a frenzy right now, trying to figure out on what to do, and how to do it..... watching the economy closely and being worried about it.....I am at least. )
Whether someone wants to live like them....or not.....is not up for debate here, and rather a personal choice.

I must be the only one not coming unglued about the economy (seriously?!?!?!). And I'm not gonna learn or take a clue from the Amish at all. JMO. Just thought I'd point out that they make a good living (money wise) by doing things you wouldn't know about (and maybe not even care about), but it's not like they just make their money off of broom sales and whittling wooden stools for tourists.

I wonder if they have videos like those ones we hear of that are about girls or women gone wild, or something to that effect.. I can't imagine one called Amish Women Gone Wild...
Sorry, I'm only joking - The Amish are simple folks and they live without all of the modern conveniences, and grow everything they eat. They don't have to spend money on gasoline or anything else to power their mode of transportation, and the feed for their horses is probably grown on their own land.
