Default Todays Pet Peeve 8 December 2008

People who complain about people who park in handicap spaces with disabilities other than being confined to a wheelchair. I don't believe anyone can tell by looking if a stranger is disabled or not. Asking what their disability is has to be one of the rudest things to do and not only do a growing number of people ask this intrusive question, they will verbally assault a complete stranger over a parking space.

I am not opening this thread up to those who want to complain about strangers with "invisible disabilities." I can't tell you how hurtful those angry glares and rude comments are to those of us with "invisible" health concerns. How did America become so hateful toward her fellow man? It's a really sad statement of our free society.

For the hateful people that have nasty things to say about strangers, go somewhere else.

I agree!
I do glance up(habit I used to monitor this for the county) to see if there's a sticker of placard....But I never confront the occupants in the car......

If they need it, fine
If they get a ticket for parking there illegally....even better.

Locally we have a hot line number to report violations of non-handicapped vehicles parked in spaces. I’ve used it several times, the phone number that is, in reporting violations. They send the owner a notice that their vehicle had been seen parked in a handicapped space.

I’ve seen one young driver (much younger then I) who was jumping in and out of the car parked in a handicapped space. It was interesting to find that after I went inside the store I saw him again in one of the isles with an elderly person in the store electric wheelchair doing their shopping. I was very happy that I hadn’t said anything to them. Guess we can easily be wrong more often then not.

Many people don’t look handicapped because they have a breathing issue or heart problem and it makes it easier to park close to the entrance.

I agree with all, but I am aware of some situations where people had borrowed grandma's (or whoever) car and parked/s in the handicap spot because it has a tag for it.

At my old office I used to work at, we had a handicap spot that was directly at the front door. One of our employees was handicap and used that spot for the most part. (He was a salesman so he was always in/out). We had another employee who's son was handicapped but she felt because she had the sticker she could park there. We explained to her that because her son was not with her therefore she cannot park there because "she" is not handicapped. That was when I learned in the state of MD they try to inforce handicap tags/stickers for the handicapped only. If you are driving a vehicle with handicap tags/stickers and you are not handicapped or the handicapped person is not in the vehicle you cannot use the privilege.

But for the most part, how is a person suppose to know whether a person has a disability or not. Because of that, you don't want to say anything and I believe alot of the reserved spots are abused by non handicap persons.

Talk about being lazy!! What's an extra few feet for an able bodied person to walk. Heck, there's a lot of folks out there who could probably do with the exercise. Leave those spaces for the people who need them. And remember that looks can be deceiving!

I agree with kali's Grandmother. If they get a ticket even better.

My pet peeve is junk mail! I don't sign up for stuff, I don't ask for magazines but they still keep on coming! Good job I recycle.

people that take forever to get their car moving out of a parking spot
how hard is it to get in car, insert key, start said car and get out of the spot because folks are waiting

especially during the holiday shopping time

my other one is

Lamp specialty stores who tell you on the phone
"I know we have that bulb in stock so I don't have to check before you drive all the way down here"
only to hear
Sorry we don't have that one in stock grrrrrrrr

Ohhhh, I hate that!

Last week I was waiting to get into the one spot open in the parking lot, and I had cars piling up behind me.....when the lady decided to fix her lipstick before she left the spot.

Thats okay, actually the last time someone tried to pass me in a parking lot while I was waiting for a car to finish pulling out of the space, she went around me and hit him. I got a kick outta that! Next time, dont be so flipping impatient!

This sounds like the driver of that truck I told you about on Thanksgiving Sunday, when I was driving on Interstate 17. The driver in it was also pretty impatient, and I couldn't go any faster than the traffic ahead of me. So I moved over to the other lane, and he zipped past me on the left, only to end up slamming his brakes about 20 seconds later, because traffic had stopped (construction zone) in both lanes, and he rear-ended a full-sized Nissan Titan truck!
