Purse stolen
My close friend had her purse stolen.
Someone has her drivers license, checkbook, debit card and cell phone.
She is pretty sure she had nothing in her purse that had her social security number on it. She has no credit cards.
She went straight to the bank and closed her account, called the police to make a report, closed her cell phone account, got a new phone and went to DMV.
She had no cash in her purse Thankfully she had her car keys in her coat pocket. Car and house should be OK !
Can anyone think of anything else she needs to do?
*Can someone do something with her drivers license number but " no " social ?*
Can they take her identity?

Identity theft is not out of the question. A lot of illegals will take a drivers license in to get a "replacement SS card". Now, they'll take the SS card and go to DMV and get a Replacement drivers license. Then they have a Drivers license with their picture on it, and a SS card. They probably won't use it to go after credit, but they most certainly may use it to get work.
Plus, they now have her address. That's why my drivers license shows a PO box. But DMV has my physical address. I know some states won't allow that, but mine does.
tell her to watch everything closely. Don't be paranoid, but just keep up to date on everything and be ready to respond to it. Telephone numbers for DMV, Bank, and such should be kept on one list so you don't have to look things up later should you notice odd things on accounts and such.

Contact all of the credit bureaus and have her account flagged. This will make them contact HER at the address she has given them to verify anything before credit is given/extended. Did her checkbook have her ledger? Probably did. She closed her account right and opened a new one....... or the bank should have. The person can still take her bank account number and use another name on it or use her name and address on another bank account number.

YES!!!
Our car was broken into a few years ago. We got home late that night, and were planning to leave early in the morning. I had left my debit card, drivers license, a checkbook and all the bills for the month to be mailed in the morning aka signed checks, in the car.
Our identity was stolen, and to this day, I occasionally have a hard time writing checks. We immediately closed the accts, called the police, alerted the credit bureaus.
The theifs spent the weekend renting a UHaul store and driving around to every big box store in the area spending TONS of money and just basically filling up the truck. Luckily, in one store, someone questioned the ID not looking like the person signing the checks - it was MY ID! So she got nervous and ran, leaving my ID - and I was able to, at least, get that back...
We had to go to the bank and get a signed affidavit that we didn't write any of the checks, and noting all that happend. They even went into one of our bank branches a few times and tried to cash checks. Later, the person investigating this called and said that likely our checkbook was stolen, and involved a whole other group of people...
It was a freakin' mess.
Oh! And the wrote down my debit card number, didn't steal it, and used it to open cell phone accts online, and purchase cell phones.
Anyway, long story short - yes, absolutely, her identity can be stolen.

I would change the locks on the house even if her keys were in her pocket. They still have her address. Changing the locks doesn't guarantee someone can't break in - when the intentions are bad, nothing will stop these people.
I have been very lucky to have never been a victim of something like this but I try to be very careful also. However, last year, I got a call late one evening from one of my credit cards f r a u d department.
They noticed a charge of over $1300 at LinensNThings from New Jersey. The card was processed manually. Another authorization at another store had been processed manually also but the card number was entered one digit off. This made them suspicious, in addition to my usage history and, I live in Miami. The credit card office called me within the first 24 hrs. to confirm the purchases. This happened to have been a account which I had put my son down as joint account holder. So of course I asked him first but he had no knowledge and the card was actually sitting in a file cabinet at home.
The bank closed the account, re-issued a new card, and we were not liable for anything.
Where in the world did they get the card # from????

Yes, got this in an e-mail today Would be good for all of us.
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
To check your Mobile phone's serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # . A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe. When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless. You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point in people stealing mobile phones.

I got my purse stolen right off my hand when the young black boy asked for directions to a street when I pointed he grabbed my purse and ran. He got away with my Drivers License and my checkbook. At the time I was on check systems (A system that lets stores know to not accept your check because you haved bounced in the past) and had no money left in my checking account so I wasn't worried about anything really, but to my SURPRISE They hit up like 10 stores in one day, for several days, that didn't have check systems Like Raleys and Bel-air supermarkets and bought tons of food and cash back at the same time! The bank notified me that I owed almost 2 thousand dollars, they eventually cleared it, can u imagine, someone on check systems and no money can actually still use your checks and drivers license. I was so mad at Raleys for not checking my picture drivers license that I went to Raleys to buy 500 dollars of food to see if I could get away with it eventually for some odd reason they knew and sent me to collections for that one check! Ha! The good news is I had my keys on me and I had my P o Box on my checks and not my residence address on it. So I always make sure all my family have a p o box on their checks instead of their residence. The bad part also my drivers license expires not untill 2010 so i still feel on the edge about my DL's out there some where.
