How very true...But if our pets out lived us what would happen to them and where would they go if we were done with our time on this earth????

I've heard parrots live long lives.

Alice try a Galapagos Turtle. They live well over 100 years. I guess the fact that they weigh 500 lbs makes them poor lap pets.

I wonder who came up with the idea of 'dog years' or 'cat years'. I think 1 human year is equivalent to 5 dog years or something?

I sure agree with that, I had to put down my best friend 18 years ago and I still miss her.

I remember when I was younger that it was 1 human year was 7 years to a dog. Later I heard the first year was 7, and every subsequent year was 6. Guess we'd net a vet or pet afficionado (sp?) to say for sure.

All I know is that when your pet is like family (like my dog is to me), it can be just as tough. But, just like my kids, he loves me from the minute I walk in the door, until I leave for work the next day (especially if I bring a chew bone home for him once in a while!) .

Oh I hear you on this one Alice. A year and half ago we lost our wonderful 12 year old dog due to a spinal injury. Then we had to say goodbye to our 14 year old girl this New Year's Eve. We have our spunky JRT who keeps us on our toes, and wants nothing more than love, lots of walks, and good treats!

I agree! We just had to put our sweet bear down and feel like we got cheated out of more time with him!

Saddest thread ever.

I get along with my pets better than I do most people.

Yeah, my best friend not too long ago lost her 2 Westies to whom she was very attached. I told her, don't get any more dogs. They'll break your heart! Get a parrot (as someone mentioned above!)

That said, my "childhood chihuahua" lived to be about 22. We got her when I was 5, and she was still living a couple years after I got married and moved out.

By the way, alice, is today's "pet peeve" a pun???
