Popping, smacking, cracking gum. I'm a gum chewer myself, so I know it is entirely possible to chew gum without making any noise.

Smacking lips while eating. No need. I know you have to open your mouth to get the food in but open it silently. No need to make a "mwwwwack!" with every forkful.

Ditto on plate scraping. I hate hearing cutlery scraping on a plate. Clink, clank, scrape... argh it sounds awful to me!

Smacking lips while talking. I recently had to change the channel when some woman came on to demonstrate a recipe and every sentence started with "Mmmmmmwack!" as she began to speak.

When you're alone, have at it. Make platter clatter. Chew like a cow. Snap and pop that gum 'til your jaws hurt. But when in the presence of others (or at least, in my presence ), please eat like you have some upbringing .

I'm with the rest of y'all on the (c)rap music, smacking-chomping-gulping while eating (and it doesn't look too pretty, either) and cell phones.

But the one thing that is guaranteed to yank me out of a sound sleep and levitate me right straight out of bed is the sound of my cat's claws on the mirror over my dresser as he scratches it.

The little devil has figured out that I can sleep through the "I'm hungry/want to play" meowing, and it doesn't bother me at all when he walks around on the bed on top of me. I sometimes half-rouse when he starts knocking things off my dresser and nightstand; I can sleep through the sound of my glasses case hitting the floor, though I did wake up when he knocked the space heater off the dresser recently.

However, when he gets on my dresser, stands up on his hind legs and scratches the mirror with his claws, it's worse - oh, a thousand times worse! - than fingernails on a blackboard. I am outta that bed in a heartbeat... and he knows it. And once I'm out of bed, he hops down from the dresser, chirruping like mad and purring like a jet engine, and leads me to the kitchen to get him out a scoop-full of food to shut him up.

If only the bedroom door would latch, I could at least be assured of sleeping in past 6:00 a.m. on weekends. However, this elderly (60 years) house has settled enough over the decades that the bedroom door won't latch any more, and that feline knows exactly how to knock the doorstop out of the way to gain access.

Yep, claws on the mirror... that's the sound that gets on my nerves.

Hey, anyone want a cat??

Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more irritating to me than dissonant "smooth jazz" stuff blaring in stores, restaurants, what-have-you. Most of these establishments are under the impression that everyone just loves this stuff, so it's usually unbearably loud.

I have to literally run out of stores, it's so irritating.
(I do like wide array of generes, from Swing-Big Bands, to Country...oldies...R&B, R&R, pop...classical, standards...)

When the one yokel fireman down the street feels he has to turn on the siren the instant he leaves the fire station. Most of the others are very considerate.

I hate to have the TV on unless I'm actually watching it. The continual meaningless noise just makes me nervous. I love when the house is quiet. This also goes for medical offices which have a TV going. AAARGH.
The best doctor's office I've ever been in had total silence with only a mesmerizing fish tank making a gentle bubbling sound.
I guess at the root of this is that I only want to hear the outside noises of the world when I want them, but not all the time.

Did he let it out on purpose??? Or did he at least apologize for the "accident"? What's worse, is being in an elevator with someone who's snuck one out.
