Here's a quote from Lebron James from the NBA Cavaliers, on their loss to Orlando.

"It's hard for me to congratulate somebody after you just lose to them. I'm a winner. It's not being a poor sport or anything like that. If somebody beats you up, you're not going to congratulate them. That doesn't make sense to me. I'm a competitor. That's what I do. It doesn't make sense for me to go over and shake somebody's hand."

While this behavior is obvious among many professional athletes, I'm noticing more and more where people just seem to have lost basic manners and civility.

It seems to me more and more men are just boys nowadays.

What do you guys think?

Professional sports have been going that way for a long while now. I only watch the AA league baseball games here, won't catch me EVER at or watching a "professional" sports game. They're overpaid entertainers with a superiority complex, and babies to boot.

Not exactly shocking considering if you've ever watched any sports game with parents in the stands recently. Especially male sports. Douche promotion is about all it equates to. I do wonder which it is in that case though, more of a chicken or the egg thing. Is it professional sports lack of sportsmanship, or is it more parents lack of promoting it showing up in professional sports?

I absolutely agree. I was astounded when I saw a clip of Lebron saying that on the news last night. I don't get it. When I was involved with school sports we were required to shake hands with our competitors.

I think it's time that colleges require a class in being a good roll model before they give out scholarships.

We went to the Lakers/Pistons playoff games a few years back and stayed in the same hotel the Lakers were staying in...Lebron's words are KIND and MANNERLY in comparison to Kobe Bryant...talk about RUDE!! Their only saving grace was Shaquille...

Yes, Chow, folks are rude and half the time I have to wonder if they were not raised in barns.

You are right...they are good examples of good sportsmanship and manners. Cal Ripkin is on the short list as well

You should always congratulate the winning opponent in a game - they were the better player or daner or whatever. Then you strive to do better next time, so you can win. In dancesport, we always congratulate the couples who place better than we do - then do better next time.

Ugh, what a jerk. It's sad that it doesn't even occur to him that he can be gracious and a winner. I think nothing puts the shine on an outstanding performance like a little humility.

I agree, of all of the people in my life that I've been impressed with were the people that were smart and talented and were humble.

Very impressive, to me anyway.
