Today's Happy Thing 25 Mar 2009
Books!
IN every shape, size, color and from every era! I love books!
Tuesday I had some freetime and let myself indulge in a favorite pastime. I went to a couple of used books stores, mostly to browse, since I have a lot of books at home.
As I rested my tired feet while sitting on a chair, I looked up at the shelves of books I was exploring mentally, and I was happy!
As noted a few days ago, I love computers. But for me books beat the cr*p out of computers and arguably always will! There is no electricity required, you can dip in and out of them with ease, and they undergo an editorial process so you know there is a level of accountability that the internet doesn't have.
Books are so much fun, contain so much information, are a windows into the world's many places, both mental and physical. I even love the feel of the heft of a good book in my hand and the fragrance of paper, ink, and binding that conspires to form the perfume of each volume.
"I cannot live without books." - Thomas Jefferson

You won't get any argument from the curmudgeonly bookworm, bjh! Books are my eternal love, my solace and my escape from the stress and challenges of the day. When I was a teenager, struggling with the usual teen angst, exacerbated by some family issues going on at the time, I used a favorite book (Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy) as my escape, rather than drugs or alcohol. I calculated that I read that entire series, cover to cover, well over 100 times during high school, and for years I could quote entire pages of it.
The other way books have influenced my life is to enhance my grasp of the language, thus by extension helping me to be a better writer myself. I write for fun and relaxation, and I know that the thousands of books I have absorbed throughout the decades have had a direct influence on my writing.
Books are my happy thing any and every day!

Livewire, get some of the old type peppermint stick (I think it's King Leo?). Put a couple sticks in a baggy and crush it to a powder, then sprinkle it over that chocolate ice cream! It's goooood!

I love books also! One of my earlier memories is of going to ask my mom what a word was in one of my Disney books...it was the word Aristocat. I still remember lying on my bedroom floor at night, the book in the slice of light from the hall light. Dad used to catch me and make me go back to bed!
My husband and I are both avid readers, and we have always hoped that our love of reading would pass on to our kids. We've done our best with reading to them, going to the library, etc, just sometimes it just doesn't click. My husband's two brothers don't read anything.
Therefore, my happy today is that yesterday, of his own accord, DS, who is 5 and in K, picked up a book, sat down next to me, and read the entire thing to himself. Not to me like he did the other day, but to himself, following along the words with a finger when he was unsure. Yay! He's a reader, too!
Midwestern, wanted to rep ya, but did too recently so it wouldn't let me! Loved reading those Tolkien books, too!
