OK here's the rest of the story. About advancements in technology.

My mother started getting rid of stuff. She had one of the IBM selectrics sitting in her closet - for 40 yrs. It looked almost brand new except a couple of keys would get stuck. My son sold it on E-bay.
Then, here I am doing some cleaning out too. I found a one-piece rotary phone that I got when I was 17!!!!! (I remember because of who gave it to me). That went on E-bay to Germany.
Funny how some of these "vintage" items sell so well. My son sells all kinds of stuff on there so anything I don't want.... guess where it goes???

Default CDs vs. records!

My turn. I used to buy a lot of records in my long-ago youth, but then I started to lag. I don't know, somehow I just wasn't buying records for a few years.

I was living in Seattle, and I decided to go buy a record. I walked into the record store, walked back out, looked at the store's sign -- yep, music -- and went back in. I was in shock. I had NOOOOO clue what the heck those things were there!

I saw these strange looking rectangular plastic containers with little boxes inside. I couldn't find the record section. I finally got up the nerve to ask the clerk, "Where are the records?" He gestured with his head to "over there." I went over and there were maybe 50 records -- just in a little bin. I said, "No, where are ALL the records?" He said that was all he had. I then noticed those strange plastic holders again, and asked "What are these?"

Well, lo and behold, I had no clue: "CD's" "What???" "CD's" "What???" I felt like I had landed on Mars and we were speaking Martian!

He told me "No one uses records anymore." "WHAT?? What do you mean? I HAVE a record player!" Then the long explanation came out about what had transpired in only the past few years. Somehow I had not known about it!! (I guess my friends weren't buying CD's either.)

I didn't buy a CD that day. In fact, I had to figure out what a CD player was! To this day, I remember that one moment in time when I felt like I had been frozen in ice, like a prehistoric man, and then unfrozen saw the strange and amazing things that now existed.

Of course, now I can figure out a dvd player, cd player, etc., but I'll never forget the day I lost my innocence.

P.S.
And then about 10 years later I saw Joan Baez in concert, and she had this backup group of musicians who were much younger. In jest she said that after concerts they go backstage and she tells them all about "records!"

If I look down at the keyboard - I'm lost! I have no idea where the keys are.
I set my fingers down on the keyboard and just start typing. It's confusing!
I can relate to this -

My home computer has many keys with the letter worn off. Without my hands in the proper position, I can not even find the keys by a hunt - peck method. If I have to think about the process I am screwed.

I also learned on a manual typewriter back in the day. At one point I was 80 words a minute on an electric, but I knew people who were over 100 wpm.

Just practice. I've been typing since the age of seven (no lessons, just informal practice) and now routinely work at 105wpm without thinking about it. Don't focus on speed though, just focus on the key layout and accurately hitting keys without lookina at them. Speed will come with time.

Good luck.

Okay folks, let's bring you into the 21st century where typing is obsolete, that's right you heard me "obsolete." I don't type, I dictate, I'll say it again, I don't type, I dictate. I never learned how to type, however, I have installed a program in my computer so that all I have to do is talk to it and it types out everything I say, which is what it's doing right now, my wife can type 160 words a minute without looking at the keyboard, she took typing in high school, I can dictate faster than she can type with fewer typos, you're probably wondering how it is that I'm able to do that. It's a program that is called, Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.5. You can pick it up at any computer supply store for just under $100 and if you follow the directions you will be able to do what I am doing right now, talk to your computer and it will print all of this out for you without typing, it's very easy to use as long as you take the time to work with it in the beginning and then you will be amazed as to how easy it is to use and wonder why you didn't do it a long time ago.

Hmmm... Nitram, I thought you're not allowed to say stuff like that (underlined text) here! LOL..

I don't do the hunting and pecking, but at least what you get when you type fast is better than what I get, which is **&Ekdkd8eikd%%#$$ !$ %&*& ..... Ooops.. there's a 4-letter word in there, sorry!
