Yes, but that house was poorly and cheaply built then (mid sixties) and if it's still standing...I'd be shocked. I wouldn't want to live there again anyway....and furthermore, I don't want to live in California ever again!

Yes. I could buy both houses that I grew up in and the one my parents lived in for a few months after I was born. And still have money left over. The first house that I was a baby in is not in an area that I'd want to raise a family now. The 2nd one the area has held up really well. Lots of young families moved in several years ago and have kept it nice. The 3rd house that my parents still live in (it is for sale, any takers?), I could easily afford it but I would NOT want to live there.
My husband is in the same boat. He could afford to buy all the houses he lived in while growing up. But hey, our parents were POOR.

I grew up on a farm and could easily afford the house. It's probably worth $120K at best but I most definetly couldn't afford the land ($3.2-$3.4 million out of my price range). But we still own the land which will eventually be mine...and won't cost me a cent .

No. I grew up in Southern Cali. In 1984, my parents bought their 4 bedroom house for just over $100,000. It is now worth about £895,000, with the add ons my parents have constructed. There was one house just up the street from my parents', that didn't have any add ons at all. It was just the 3 small bedrooms, 1.5 baths, and it recently sold for $500,000. We could have probably stretched and bought that house, but there would be no room for our growing family.

Well, that was a trip down memory lane.
Bah! the answer is no. The neighborhoods where I grew up in South Minneapolis and Bloomington, MN are going for $300K and up. My dad bought the house in Mpls in 1970 for $24,000 and now its over $300K according to zillow.

I still live in the town that I grew up in, and yeah, we could buy a house here. We're thinking about it. Houses here are wicked cheap. Very seldom do you see one over $120k, but the general range is about $60-$75k. But then the population of the village that I live in is like 850. Just right for me!!

Upward Mobility
I'm all for Upward Mobility. The answer is YES. As a matter of fact, we are selling that house. Nice little town, cute, quiet but we out grew it.
