I can afford to live in the area my parents bought their first house in that I lived in until I was about 9. It is a small street of 1940s ranches and cape cod's that is good for something which a condo budget that does not want to live in one.

I can't afford the next neighborhood we moved to. It's the 'exectutive type' neighborhood kind of centered around the private swim club and public golf course. The smaller homes in that area start around $400,000 with the average being about $625,000 (4 bedrooms 3 1/2 baths, 3200 square feet, 1 acre).

The area I grew up in is Toledo,Ohio. Somewhere by railroad tracks. I could buy the house we lived in, and a few others for what they sell for now. But i wouldn't want to live there.

I grew up in a small town in Tennessee and bought my first home in the DC area toward the beggining of the boom (2002). After selling that, I could pay cash for the house I grew up in, if it still existed. My neighborhood was eaten by a sinkhole about 8 or 10 years ago The problem is, if I didn't pay cash for it, I'm not sure I could get a job that would pay the mortgage there.
