Our cats -- male and female tuxedo cats, most likely from the same litter -- were strays. We had been leaving out treats for our neighbor's cat (and the neighborhood raccoon, skunk, rabbit and groundhog ... ), and these guys showed up. We think they were the last of a litter that wasn't adopted out, and were dumped in the shopping center parking lot behind our house.

They were about six months old, and the female was skinny and hobbling from a leg injury. We began feeding them -- much to one neighbors' annoyance -- and weren't going to take them in, but then our 17-year-old cat died. It was tough getting them to trust us, but we finally lured the male into the house, and trapped the female. It was several more months before they'd let us pet them or pick them up.

They're 3 years old now, they've become fussy eaters, and I can't get them out of my lap!

Oh my goodness.....Never bought an animal until five years ago we bought our first male Dachshund. Now we have three Dachshund buddies.....

Yes, we adopted our animals through Petco when they have their adoption day's!
.........But in the past people knew all they had to do is come to my house when they needed to find a home for their animal!! Either I would keep it or find a good home for it!
I have had dog's, cat's, birds, iguana which by the way was about 4 ft long, rats, fish, baby fox, which a neighbor was a constuction worker and apparently they killed the mama by accident when they were clearing some land and there was her young.....
You wouldn't believe the creatures I have had or needed to find a home for.
When we moved here back in Nov., somebody dumped a cute little black & white Kittie at our house! He's not so little any more.... and turned out to be quite the mouser......
And no one even knows me here! But the good Lord does and knows I have a big, big soft heart when it comes animals!!!

All five of my animals were either strays or shelter adoptions.

Most of our pets have either been from shelters or strays! We have 2 dogs and a cat. Our Vizsla mix came from the shelter, the Rhodesian Ridgeback we bought from the back of a guys truck in town - Hubby and kids had to stop!!! At that point I knew we would come home with one! Our cat was found on our road when he was about 4 weeks old.

One of our local animal shelters just took in 68 dogs from a shelter in CA that was going to have to put them down. The shelter did a bunch of TV advertising and so forth, to let people know, and amazingly enough, in less than a week they have found homes for 33 of them!!

I've been tempted to go there, but you know how that goes ............ I better make sure we really want another pet, cause if we go, I am sure we'll leave with one!

I'm glad to see we have so many animal lovers in the other topics forum.

Most of our pets have been strays who adopted us.

My older son found a part Shepherd on the street, in the cold, 15 years ago. She was given the name Buster by the same son. I don't think he did very well in biology. A search for an owner produced nothing. Over the last 15 years Buster had been Mrs D's companion and watch dog when I had to travel. She became my good friend when I recovered from by-pass surgery. She passed away 4 weeks ago. It doesn't matter if Nancy or I is downstairs first in the morning our first thought is that we have to let Buster out. Old habits are hard to loose and old friends not easily forgotten.
