I use Facebook to help me find lost friends and it helps me with my Geneology work. I have had no problems.

Or, if, like me, you have no ground line and use a pre-paid cell phone, that even the FBI has trouble tracking.

While you look for ways to fail. I'll continue to use those tools to succeed.
Best wishes.

Also, Facebook can kill someone's career. Do I really want my name out there attached to all my hobbies right there for anyone thinking of hiring me to see? In a perfect world, an employer would only worry that I am doing nothing illegal and not some drunken party person, but we do not live in a perfect world. Hence, I do not want my real name attached to a expedition to photograph ghosts or the Ritual Magick of the Golden Dawn or Folk Metal. Do I really want a possible employer to see that stuff?

Why not just broadcasts your social Security Number online while you're at it? I mean, on Myspace (which I'll probably end up getting) you can have a screen name, just like 99.9% of the sites on the web. Facebook, on the other hand, wants to make it easier for any random psychopath to track you down and bake you with onions and Fava Beans.
I mean, all you need is someone's full name and a general idea of where they live and you can track them down. With Facebook, you can just search someone's real name and find a photo of them and hence, have a good starting point on your murderous adventure. People talk about the "better security" on Facebook, but that is a loud of bull.
On Myspace, I can put for my name "Victorian Punk" city "Atlantis" and put a blizzard in Montana as my photo...Facebook? You have to state who you are, where you live, and where you went to school... Also, even if you use those "safety features", the info is still there. It just takes an associate's degree in computer science and a hour or two to hack the site and find out all about you..with Myspace, all you will find is some fictional information that is of no use to a cannibal Neo-Nazi Skinhead who's hungry for some dark meat.
So...why have a Facebook and put your safety in danger just because "everyone else is doing it??

I agree. I started a simular thread like this a month or 2 ago and got all kinds of heat for it. I dont see the draw of this facebook crap as well as twitter, myspace and worse of all texting. What a waste of life's precious time.
I pondered this fear of broadcasting my name all over the net while designing a web site for me and the skills I posess. I finally came up with a charactor name with my real first name and the last name is my product. If not for that idea creating a cartoon charactor I would have an expensive web site that I never would have put online.
And now that I read many of the posts I see the OP got slammed here too. Some people just love modern technology even if it takes away what little privacy they have left.

I started a Facebook account about 2 months ago when a friend emailed me and asked me to be their "facebook buddy" or whatever they call it. My friends and family send me emails everyday but many of those same friends rarely make new entries in Facebook so I don't get much out of it. After reading some of the security concerns on this thread I may go ahead and cancel my account!

Well I signed up recently to facebook and I hate it. It sucks. I keep getting sent these stupid "tests" and "quizzes" and when you take them it's nothing but link after link of advertisements. I haven't found anyone I was looking for and I think the general look and layout stinks. I'm canceling my page. It's way too invasive and I don't think the OP or anyone else is being overly paranoid, just smart.

I have instant messenger. And nothing but my name and a preety picture on my profile. I have more stuff here on this profile than I do there. So I'm not worried about that one. But I don't have any legitimate reason to want Facebook. Others who do , well , thats not really my business. I have nothing against Facebook users.

No reason to give out personal info on facebook, but for me Facebook is awesome for re-connecting with people who i lost touch with. Great way to network!

I have no desire to sign up for a FACEBOOK page. The people that I am in contact with right now, IN REAL EVERY DAY LIFE, are the ones I choose and WANT to stay in contact with. I have NO desire to be contacted by people I went to high school with over 25 years ago and I have no desire to meet new friends.
Its funny because from what I hear, as soon as you sign up, you'll start receiving friend requests from people that you never even SPOKE to in high school, which I think is beyond phony!! One friend I know said some girl requested to be her friend on FACEBOOK but never even speaks to her when they see each other in person.
There were many times, I wanted to sign up for FACEBOOK, just to see WHO would request to be my friend...I just wanted to do it out of curiosity and for kicks, but the thought of signing up always quickly fizzles.
