BERLIN (Reuters) - A German who tried to fix his leaky air mattress blew up his apartment instead, the fire brigade in the western city of Duesseldorf said Wednesday.

The 45-year-old man used tire repair solvent to plug a hole in his airbed and left it overnight.

He should have used a manual air pump to inflate the bed.

Wow... Maybe he'll try a waterbed instead...

That's going to spark up a lot of controversy about the safety of airbeds, and the German media will certainly blow things out of proportion.

There is no humor when a child is hurt, which is what happened to this guy's 3-year-old daughter, who suffered 1st degree burns.

Down south, I think they would have used duct tape to fix the leak.. Hey, it's probably safer than the tire repair stuff that guy used.

Yeah, that's exactly what I was just thinking. Solvents and anything that might cause a spark is obvously a bad combination but I was a little surprised the explosion caused as much damage as it did. He must have used a lot of solvent! My prayers certainly go out to the little girl that was seriously hurt.
