Lotsa' people drive cars without knowing how to time the camshaft or connect an OBD scan tool to their ECM, quite simply put, they own a car,
to enable them to drive, to get from place to place. Does the average driver have to deal with changing the wires or the spark plugs, I don't think so,
these are chores that the mechanic is better equipped to do and many drivers leave the harder things to accomplish, to the professional.
For years, computers have become more "user friendly", black screened DOS commands, once given at a C:/ prompt, have been replaced with
icons, hyperlinks and a whole battery of simplified commands, meant to encourage the new user to "get their feet wet". Commands like autoexbat.exe,
config.sys, chkdsk have pretty much fallen into the same tar-pit as the old A; drive and 5-1/2" floppy and even the 3-1/2" 1.44 mb disc, that final resting
place of planned obsolescence
I didn't perceive a "high and mighty" attitude from the OP's post, just the feeling that there can always be an element of impatience on the part of those
who try to help others in learning the computer. I also believe that 3rd. party software writers are working harder than ever to make tasks and computer
navigation easier. I also subscribe to the old adage that "old dogs DO learn new tricks" and have faith that once you've been able to convince a new user,
that there is little to no chance that they'll be able to "wipe out" their computer by a single misplaced keystroke, they'll become more secure as they feel their
way around. Personally, I'm really glad that users don't have to deal with DOS commands anymore because there's nothing more frightening to the new users,
than having to figure a way out of the blue screen of death or a black screen filled with hieroglyphic commands.

My mother (55) is one of those people who simply cannot learn to use a computer. Years of using an incredibly basic Mac OS 9 setup, and she cannot figure out how to use the internet, email, word processing etc. Hours and hours of one-on-one instruction, and it never sinks in. She is a pretty decent typer, though... I give her credit because she makes an effort to learn. My father worked in sales for 30 years at AT&T and has been using computers since the DOS days, but still can barely use Windows beyond the internet.

A hundred yrs ago, no one would admit to having Indian blood.
Now a days, it's funny how many people claim to have Native American ancestry.

It is very annoying to me when people ask me how to do something so simple.
The funny thing is my senior citizen pastor said young people are so smart because they understand how to text and use computers. Age has nothing to do with using technology. Just read the damn instructions.

That's a puzzler. Maybe it's the new rudeness that seems to come along with each new technology. Like people who are polite in person, but become obnoxious maniacs behind the wheel.
Or for another computer thing: people who ignore emails that it is their JOB to answer. There seems to be a childish p.o.v. on the part of some that because an email is a distant contact, they can ignore it and that's okay.
And I have to say when I've experienced it, it's been much more from Americans. Colleagues from overseas are much more likely to be responsible enough to respond and to do so in an intelligent useful way.

True! Being a Native American or Indian has developed a mystique that some people want to grab a part of. No one can go back and add ancestors. I guess that's called being a poser. Whatever it is, it's phony.

That being said here's my peeve: people who make snide anonymous rep comments. I've gotten them from time to time from those without the cajones to identify themselves. Often saying something critical that reveals some sort of ignorance on their part.
I don't have a problem with a positive anonymous remark or quick-reputation points.

I agree with being patient. It is entertaining how unknowing some can be about computers.
Unless someone has a mental disability, there's no reason they can't learn though.

That would happen anyway this time of year with the shorter days. Maybe summer in Florida?

I have no issue with it as it increases my rep points! Fortunately, I only received two of these but they were so illiterate that I got a good chuckle out of them.

Good point! I just think it's cowardly. It's impossible for anyone to accurately judge someone else on the internet.
