Lack of curiousity in some people is shocking!
A story about human nature that I would like people to discuss:
During my lunch hour I went over to a local regional shopping center and had my eyes examined. It was very quiet at the optometry practice I went to and the young woman who took care of me made some general conversation. I told her that she is facing a lot of competition in the mall with three other chain optometrists. She told me that she had been working as an optometrist at this practice in Sears Store for a year and never found the time to go into the actual shopping mall. I asked her again if I heard right, she had never walked into the mall that the Sears was connected to. Yes, she had never walked into the Mall. I was shocked, not once just to eat at the food court or walk around during her lunch break. No, she said never.
It reminds me of other people I run into who have never been down the street to the next community or even down the road to a nearby park. Other people I know who work with me have never been to the other floors our business is located on. Even though they have worked here for years.
Can you relate to the Optometrist or others I have told you about? Is it fear or lack of curiousity?

I am more concerned with the lack of survival instinct people do not posess. I was taught humans as well as animals were born with it. It just ain't so.
Well try this: I lived in Las Vegas for 10 years and maybe gone to the strip 3 times. Locals do not go there unless they have a visitor and the visitor always wants to go see the strip
Where I grew up they built this big mega store called a mall. It was touted as one of the very first fully indoor mall complete with food court. I didn't go till some 20 years later despite all the hoopala over it.
I dont like following the brown spot in front of me like a Sheep. I dont follow societal norms. I would have at least walked that mall for some exercise which I can assume that girl you spoke with was in desperate need of.
Some people are like you describe. They never leave their little coccoon. I feel sorry for them.

I'm personally not as concerned with whether or not people check out their immediate environment. Far more disconcerting for me is the lack of introspection in people.
Most don't seem to ever get to know themselves, what makes them tick, why they say or do the things they do. A life lived unexamined is a life not worth living, and all that.
But it fits in with your curiosity bit. As they are not very curious about themselves. No wonder they care little about what goes on around them as well.

That they've never checked out the mall doesn't concern me, if you've seen one you've seen them all. Perhaps she has no interest in overpriced clothing, bad food, and being harassed by kiosk vendors.

Yeah, I can believe she had never been inside the mall. Malls don't offer much anymore (to me at least). The only time I go to the mall is at Christmastime to check out the decorations and see Santa.

Yes, Malls can be dull, but..
Yes, shopping malls can be dull at times but she did not have to make an effort to go to the mall, she was already there! You would think she would have gone into the mall at least once to check out the other places you could buy glasses just to see where the competition was. Or at least walked through to get something to eat or stretch her legs to get out of her small shop.

Lack of curiosity
Yep I agree. It is unfortunate and sad, not because she should have an interest in the mall. That is not the issue. Just having an interest / curiosity in your surroundings is what is at issue. Most people have a narrow routine they follow day to day and never get out of it. Also many people do not want to walk anywhere. My guess is that she was also overweight as is the majority of Americans.

Maybe they just don't care.
I work with people who have never come in on the weekend and explored the whole building. I'm just nosey and have to check everything out.

You're assuming quite a lot don't you think? What makes you think she is in desperate need of exercise or never leaves "her coccoon"? Maybe she prefers to walk outside, and maybe she just does her job and gets out of there so she can live her life.
