My honest opinion? You don't need to know any foreign languages! Don't wast your time learning them. Before you jump me for not being PC or realize we "live in a global economy" I'm fluent in Spanish and French with some German, my first degree was liberal arts. Its never done me any good.
If you travel, you travel for one of two reasons, business or pleasure. If you're traveling for business, the people you connect with know English. They won't pay to send you there then hope you can communicate! And if you travel for pleasure, well, you know you've wandered too far if no one speaks English! The only ones who don't speak English are the people you wouldn't be doing business with, anyways.
Ever try out your foreign language in another country? Speak a few words and they answer you back in English, anyways!

Considering the current and expected economic climate, job availability, and pay scales, I would say Cursing would be a handy language to have.

Ah, well, if you just want to meet and greet, make new friends, etc, then learn as many languages as you can, I'd start with Spanish, since its so well-spoken here, as well as throughout the world.
Just don't think you can make a career out of knowing a foreign language!
