Whatever happen to Worlds Fair?
I remember when I was little that Knoxville Tn held this event and if you ever been to this city you gotta question how did a city of this size get nominated to host it and how in world did they accomindate this occasion.
But I never hear on the news about the next worlds fair is it only held in a certain amount of years and if it still exist where is the next one or why isnt it seem to be mention much?
Thanks

Perhaps Americans don't hear a lot about them because lately they've been someplace else. Here's the last six
1988 Brisbane (Australia)
1992 Seville (Spain)
1993 Daejon (South Korea)
1998 Lisbon (Portugal)
2000 Hanover (Germany)
2005 Aichi (Japan
And the dates don't seem to line up either, like they would for an event such as the Olympics. I remember going to Expo 67 in Montreal when I was a kid and it was awesome. Good topic.

I can't remember the year, but I attended the World's Fair in New Orleans with my family, when we were on vacation. Took a 30 story gondala ride over the Mississippi River (only thing I really remember about it, I was pretty young). But never heard of World's fair's after that.

Thanks for the post.
I've been telling people since grammar school that I attended the Chicago World's Fair. The last one in Chicago was in 1933, and the one before that was in 1893.
Now I can understand the reason for all the strange looks I received. I wonder how many people thought that I looked well-preserved for my antiquity.
I now realize that I actually visited the Chicago Railroad Fair, in 1949. Hey, I'm 16 years younger and it feels teriffic. Let's play two.

In 1967 my family went to Montreal for the worlds fair>I vividly remember the Burmese pavilion and the Russian pavilion. They were huge buildings with ornate fixtures and moldings. I was awe struck. Man and his World was a moving floor that took visitors into the human body. If I remember correctly a big part of the US pavilion was dedicated to space travel (probably because the US was in a "space race" with the Russians). It was a huge building with lots of glass and I remember it was the first time anyone in my family had been on an escalator! WOW! The Wright Brother"s plane hung from the ceiling and Apollo 7(?) also hung from cables. What a great joy for a kid of 10 years-never forget it!

The Knoxville World's Fair was mired in controversy and fraud. One of the people that brought it to Knoxville was responsible for the fourth largest bank failure in this country's history.
He was given a 20-year prison sentence.
He was paroled and now lives in Georgia.
It's funny, because I was just talking to a co-worker today that knows Jake Butcher. Knows him well.
The Sunsphere still stands over Knoxville, but is abandoned.

Funny, my husband just asked about this the other day. San Antonio, Texas hosted the one in 1968 and the license plates that year were black w/ white letters and say "Hemisfair" or something on them (I'm being lazy as I could just go look on the ones in the garage on the 68 ride).
The Worlds Fairs were always well known events for architects to show off some really wild buildings and styles.

I also went to this World's Fair. I want to say it was 1983. I am ashamed to admit that I spent more time down in the Quarter than I did at the fair........

We did the Montreal World's Fair, too. It was really, really neat. Of course, I was 2 months old. (If you believe that...) ;-)

Oh yes...I went to the New Orleans World's Fair and the Knoxville one too.
Last I heard the fairs were being held in foreign countries and many were cancelled. It seems when it is in the United States, at least they are held even though they are huge huge costs to the hosting city.
