I like this one.
Am I dying or is this my birthday?
When she woke briefly during her last illness and found all her family around her bedside.
~~ Lady Nancy Astor, d. 1964
And this one sounds about right.
Damn it . . . Don't you dare ask God to help me.
To her housekeeper, who had begun to pray aloud.
~~ Joan Crawford, actress, d. May 10, 1977
John , I read em all and found the list to be quite interesting! Good Thread!

The one that strikes me the most is Elizabeth I.
After a tremendously successful and long rule, being the richest, being the of the highest social position, the supreme leader of a church, being the most powerful person on the planet, she still would have given all of it for just a moment (in those days equal to three minutes) more of time.
I find that profoundly sad. Does it mean that nothing can satisfy us in the end no matter what we achieve? She didn't ask for love, nor for children. All she wanted was more life. What a sorrowful thing to say at the end of all things. In some ways I feel sorry for her.
Rest in peace Aunt Elizabeth.

That sure is an interesting list. Out of all of them I liked this one the best.
"Either the wallpaper goes, or I do." Oscar Wilde, writer.

That may have been apocryphal, but Wilde was an incredibly witty guy, probably the cleverest and most original man of words of his day.
There is also this one:
"Come on chaps, they couldn't hit an elephant at this dist..." —Gen. John Sedgwick. (He actually did finish the sentence, but obviously it is more effective to print it as above.) cite
And this one:
"Don't worry... it's not loaded..."
Terry Kath -- rock musician in the band Chicago Transit Authority -- as he put the gun he was cleaning to his head and pulled the trigger. Though the gun had no magazine in it he was unaware that a bullet was already in the chamber and was killed instantly. cite

As he was wasting away, Wilde awoke for a bit and looked around his elegant hotel room and remarked, "I am dying above my means."

Niccolo Machiavelli:
Florentine diplomat and political philosopher, died in 1527
"I desire to go to Hell and not to Heaven. In the former I shall enjoy the company of popes, kings and princes, while in the latter are only beggars, monks and apostles"
